Gameplay Tip of the Day – 4/27

Whenever there is a game that holds anything of value, there will be people who try to take advantage of those who are uninformed. I have been waiting to write a post like this because I know it can be a very touchy subject. I also dont want to give people ideas, however education is always a powerful weapon.

Mindset

BE CAUTIOUS AT ALL TIMES. If something is too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true. Whatever you are offered in the game that you cant verify, see or play, your red flags should immediately come up. It does not take a lot to get established in the Bunt community, and if someone gets established, its easy to use that power for taking advantage of people.

Scams I have been offered

Borrowing cards: although there are a lot of people out there who have good reputations, that doesnt mean you have to take part. If someone approaches you and asks to borrow a card, make sure you are either A) getting something of equal value to hold as collateral, or B) you dont care if that card disappears. Both should be pretty good at warding off scammers. Basically what will happen, your card will be traded and traded back to you for the purpose of obtaining a coin or card award. If the card is a top sig, you can see why someone would want to keep it and not trade back. Trades are irreversible.

Cross App Trading: There are a lot of good people out there who want to trade their Kick or Huddle cards for Bunt cards. They will offer good trades to off balance trades, but just like borrowing cards, you will need to be very cautious about what you are agreeing to. What will happen is they will send you a card for nothing in Bunt, and you send them a card for nothing in the other app, or vice versa. The problem is, there is an element of trust, and if you are going to do cross app trading, the person making the offer should accept the trade first. At that point you should feel comfortable sending your card over.

Gift card sales: Personally, I wont go through with these in any single way. There is too much at risk. I have seen people try to sell their Apple Cards, and without a great reputation, there is a lot at stake. People will offer gift card codes and all sorts of cash and other things for cards, and the bottom line is that it is against the rules (as far as I know). Of course that doesnt mean it wont happen, but just stay away. Its not worth it.

Leagues and other card deposit scams: No doubt about it, playing with friends is awesome. Playing against lots of friends for a prize is also fun. However, if you are randomly approached to join a “league” with the promise of depositing cards for a prize pool, it can be someone looking to scam you. If you have a bunch of real friends that all want to play against each other, that’s different. Raffles where you have to give up cards to enter are also against the rules and will likely get you in trouble. You will be asked to deposit a card and they will raffle off the user name of the person who gets all the pot of contributions. Its a scam.

This is just a short list, and all of them are hugely frowned upon and hugely against the rules. I would just learn to look out only for yourself, and you wont get hurt. That’s not saying the rest of the community isnt completely awesome, but one bad apple can ruin the whole bunch. Find the people you trust and build a friendly reputation. Education is always the best weapon.

New Inserts Unwrapped – 4/27

Well, the day has finally come! Masahiro Tanaka has come to Topps Bunt, and has done so in what I am calling a “soft opening.” From what the article said, the cards will be in the insert packs until Sunday and then will be released out into the normal packs after that. As far as I can tell, this will not be a limited release, so do not go trading your house for one of the cards. That being said, there is some serious value in his rare stuff.

Masahiro Tanaka SR Gold 2.0 Boost

Screen shot 2014-04-27 at 10.40.11 AM

Collectability (now): Extreme
Collectability (future): Strong
Playability: CaptureCaptureCaptureCapture

Even though this card will not be super limited, it will likely be pretty tough to pull all year long. This means the collectability should stay above any other pitcher gold, and I wouldnt be giving it up for a bunch of silvers and reds. After the mass release and some are in circulation, this should be worth about 2-3 big gold SRs or some inserts. He is a good pitcher who will score points, and I would guess that this is the type of cards that gamers will want a bunch of.

Masahiro Tanaka SCR Silver 1.75 Boost

Screen shot 2014-04-27 at 10.40.01 AM

Collectability (now): Strong
Collectability (future): Good+
Playability: CaptureCaptureCaptureCapture

I am a big fan of the Silver cards because they really arent as hard to get as the golds, and they are only 25% less in scoring points, which is good for where collections are now. You are going to have to give up inserts at this point, but come next week, you may only need a gold or two.

Masahiro Tanaka R Red 1.5 Boost

Screen shot 2014-04-27 at 10.39.52 AM

Collectability (now): Strong
Collectability (future): Average
Playability: CaptureCaptureCapture

Currently, these are trading for an insert or two, but in the future will likely be tradable for a silver or some reds.

Masahiro Tanaka UC Green 1.25 Boost

Screen shot 2014-04-27 at 10.39.40 AM

Collectability (now): Good
Collectability (future): Average
Playability: CaptureCaptureCapture

I got three inserts for my Green and I was shocked. It will likely not be that valuable going forward, but still more valuable than the average pitcher.

Masahiro Tanaka C Base

Screen shot 2014-04-27 at 10.39.29 AM

Collectability (now): Good
Collectability (future): Average
Playability: CaptureCapture

I think this card should be pretty available, but you never know. I had 2 before trading them this morning.

The Bunt List – Week of 4/26: Top 10 Cards This Week

Top 10 Valuable 2014 Cards in the App – As of 4/26:

NOTE: These cards only reflect the cards readily available in the game. Best of bunt cards with 5 copies are too scarce to value and will likely never hit the open market.

1. SR Mike Trout Signature Series (100) – 4 star playability – high scoring batter with a rarity that makes this incredibly valuable. He is also the spokesman for the game.

2. SR Derek Jeter Signature Series (100) – 2 star playability – lower scoring batter with a very high degree of rarity. Lots of collectors on the app are Yankee fans, which will help it stay valuable in his retirement year.

IMG_1554

3. SR Justin Verlander Signature Series (250) – 5 star playability – high scoring pitcher, and a new sig will always push this card up the list. Not as rare as the others, but still valuable.

4. SR Ryan Braun Signature Series (350) – 3 star playability – these signature series cards are going to continue being valuable to the point where it may not be worth including them on the list.

photo12

5. SR Andrew McCutchen Signature Series (500) – 3 star playability – slow start to the season has hurt this card’s playability. But as a signature, it will still be valuable.

6. SR Albert Pujols 500 HR commemorative card – 3 star playability – I am a huge fan of this card and think it looks pretty freaking cool. Nothing like history in action.

photo1

7.  SR Stephen Strasburg Mystery Card (76) – 4 star playability – A rare pitcher that also has no other cards in the game and only a few copies. HOT.

8. SR Andrew McCutchen Cannons (0) – 3 star playability – Of all the Cannons cards, this one is the best, even though it features him batting. Full bleed design with no border looks awesome.

Screen shot 2014-04-26 at 10.38.36 AM

8. SCR Nick Swisher Signature Series (396) – 1 star playability – This card makes the list because its a sig, nothing more nothing less.

10. David Wright LE 3x Black (250) – 4 star playability – This card has been on the rise recently, as more people realize it is a pretty playable card. Im not a huge fan of the look, but I think it will be one of the rarer cards around. Not being in packs helps.

Falling fast – Cards on their way down

1. Saber Stars – As much as I love the look of these cards, everyone has the best of the set. I have seen them go for little to nothing, which is a shame.

2. Hitters in general – I have been stockpiling some of the better boost cards of top hitters just in case, but they have really lost value over the last few weeks due to the points scoring.

On the Rise – Cards to consider chasing

1. Best of Bunt – Obviously, not many people are going to have access to the crazy rare Tulowitzki and Cueto, but they will have access to Perez and the others. I have seen these go for some really nice inserts.

2. SCR Fired Up – Its easily one of the best looking insert sets in the game, and the collectors out there want these cards for their vault.

Hot Now – But look out!

Cannons – I was not a big fan of the look of this set and I would guess that once the award comes out these will drop fast. Watch out trading top inserts for them when you know they will be losing steam.

My top gaming cards of the week

1. Albert Pujols – He is well on his way to a POTW award, and has been scorching hot since the beginning of the season. A beast so far, which hearkens back to the Albert of old. 500 HRs aside.

2. Johnny Cueto – He has had start after start where he looks basically unhittable. I had been chasing his cards all year, and boy am I glad I did.

Check back next week for a new Bunt list and updated top 10!

Game Tip of the Day – 4/26

Whenever I get a trade offer that most would consider very low value, I always wonder what that person may have been trying to accomplish. That has led me to consider my next tip to be the golden rule of trading. Follow this, and most of the time you will not have any problem getting people to accept your offers.

“If someone offered this trade to me, would I accept it?”

Basically, if you wouldnt accept your own offer if you had that card, its probably not going to be something the other person will accept either. Its something to consider next time you are considering an offer on that brand new insert that was just released.

That doesnt mean it will be 100% fool proof, because circumstances will always change based on the owner. Here are some other things to consider before offering:

  • Favorite player
  • Favorite team
  • Composition of their main collection
  • Gamer or collector

Its going to be close to impossible to get me to trade away my Joe Mauer cards unless you absolutely blow me away. That’s part of the game’s allure. Same thing with me trading away cards that facilitate a higher points total – even if I have multiples.

Trading is an art form, and it is possible to be very good at it or very bad at it. I dont consider myself a Jedi Master by any means, and sometimes I break my own rules. However, I also know that its incredibly fun to interact with the community, and its very easy to damage your reputation if you consistently break the unwritten rules.

Celebrating My Favorite Cards in Bunt!

Now that we are well into the first month of the season, its clear that Topps is committed to adding new cards to the game across the board. A lot of people are trying to get established, which is a good thing, myself being one of them. I have spent a lot of time going through the card sheet, and have set aside some of my favorite cards released in Bunt so far 2012-2014. Here is my list.

2013 Hank Aaron RC – 163

IMG_1555

Man I love this card, as I think it is about as good as it gets for the non-playable inserts. Not only is it crazy rare, but it is extremely valuable because its cool. Topps tried to recapture some of the magic with the golden moments card this year, but nothing will compare to this.

2013 David Ortiz WS Champions Sig – 136

IMG_1553

I am not a Red Sox fan, nor do I cheer for them in any way, but I think this card has some sort of extra appeal over a normal sig because it is the Championship card for the Red Sox WS win. The shot of Ortiz high fiving fans dressed in his Ski goggles is really cool, and I think it may be one of the rarest signatures in the game.

2014 Derek Jeter Signature Series – 100

IMG_1554

Cant have the Red Sox without the Yankees, and I think that this card is probably going to be one of the top cards on the 2014 sheet when all is said and done. Now that the 2014 sigs are so rare, they have attained an almost untouchable status – doubly so for Jeter in his retirement tour. He has had other sigs, but the action shot and design on this card sets it apart.

2014 Mystery Card Set

photo1 (1)

I really like the way these turned out, with the wood border and the big player picture. They were extremely tough pulls and turned into some very popular players, and I think they were a great program overall.

2013 All Star Set

IMG_1560

I really like cards that feature logos. Post season, all star, cy young, etc. These were really cool because they are rare and obviously comprised the best players in the entire league. Cant argue with the checklist.

2014 Saber Stars Mike Trout – 338

IMG_1563

This set may have dropped tremendously in value because of how common some of the cards are, but man they look good. This Trout was the prize for collecting them all, and it looks as good as any of the others maybe minus Felix Hernandez. I wish I had the established collection to get all the cards in time, but I missed out by about 4.

2014 Fired Up Set

IMG_1562

Yes, yes, I know these were modeled off the baseball card set in real life, but that doesn’t make them any less cool. Its frowned upon in baseball to show this kind of emotion on the field, and I really liked the rare shot of these guys at the height of their excitement.

2013 Fan’s Choice

IMG_1556

I love these cards and I love the checklist. I wish that Topps did more with retro designs in Bunt and this is one of the better ones of the litter. The Frank Thomas is one of the coolest cards in the game.

2013 Mystery Andrew McCutchen – 91

photo

This was the holy grail of 2013 Bunt for a while, according to resident Bunt Historian LeeObrien. You had to finish in the top 3 to get one, and it is a really cool picture and design to the card. Not a sig mind you, but worth about its card count in gold.

Maybe your favorites may be different, but that’s the fun of it – value is in the eye of the card holder!

Game Tip of the Day – 4/25

I completely understand why everyone wants to trade for 2014 signature series cards. They are cool, they are rare and they are the most valuable cards in the game. The hard thing for people to come to terms with is that you almost have to give up a limb to trade for one.

Here are some things to remember.

Duplicates

Each time I have traded for my two sigs, I have done so with someone who has more than one copy. That DOES NOT mean they will be easy to trade for, just more likely to be reasonable when getting a great offer. You will have to overpay as usual, but at least there is some likelihood the person will give up their extra copy.

Firepower

Let me put it this way – do not expect to trade 9 base cards or even boosts for these cards. You need to trade top inserts to get them. If you do not have top inserts, that’s understandable, but its something to work towards. Work up through the game, trading your rarer base cards and pack pulled nice cards for lower inserts, use those inserts to trade for others, and eventually amass a collection worthy of trading for one of these cards. You will likely need 5-7 Super Rare popular inserts with low card counts, maybe more depending on the person. To be completely honest, the first 2014 sig I traded for I had to go 18-2, two trades of 9-1. That’s how much you have to give up.

That being said – the 2013 sigs can be had for a lot less of a ransom, and usually are pretty cool cards too. If you just want a sig as a status symbol, 2013 works just fine.

Need

Let me be perfectly clear, you do not need sigs to be competitive and you dont need sigs to have fun with the game. In fact, trading for the sigs are likely going to be counterproductive to your gameplay. I learned that the hard way. If I could go back and tell myself what I know now, that 18-2 trade probably would go differently.

Etiquette

If you find someone you think will trade you for a sig – send them a same card 1:1 trade to see if they are even interested. They can look at your card sheet and see if you have enough for them to trade their card. Not only will they appreciate the note, but they wont block you for what they believe to be a lowball offer. Most people who have the sigs to trade are big time collectors, and are understanding there are people out there who just dont know what’s up. They will be happy to educate.

The people who own these cards have gotten them one of two ways – pulled them in a pack or traded for them. If they dont have 10,000 cards, these are either the best pull they have ever had and will be tied sentimentally to the card, or gave up as much as you are about to give up to get theirs. They may just not want to trade it. That’s why its best to ask.

Most importantly, if you get a denial on your big gun offer, dont worry. It will happen eventually. Just dont go offering multiple times to the same person again and again and expect to not get blocked. Its better to just have patience.

Game Tip of the Day – 4/24

Inserts are inserts, and if you havent found out by now, they are the pinnacle of pulling cards from packs. However, it can be tough to determine outright which ones will be valuable short term and which will be valuable longer term.

Here are some of the variables I look at when trading something new.

Rarity

Topps has done a great job in saying “this card will only have a print run of XXXX copies.” If that number is very low, its likely that the card will be a pretty big chase for the collectors. Even more of a contributing factor is time it will be in packs, combined with its place on the card sheet. SR cards that hit packs for 24 hours are going to be insane pulls and very valuable.

Card Design

If a card looks cool, its going to be a valuable card. Future is Now was a sweet looking set, and many people still want to trade for them. Sigs have a lot of this factor going for them, too.

Player Availability

photo3

This is a big factor – especially for pitchers. If the player only has 1 or 2 cards available in the game, be sure to calculate what that will mean. Stephen Strasburg only has 1 card, and its a low print run SR mystery card. AUTOMATICALLY this card will be coveted. If the player is marginally productive in points but a big name, they can still be worth a ransom with no other available cards.

Points

Pitchers are automatically going to be more valuable because they score more points. That’s just something that wont change until the game changes. Felix and Verlander opening day cards are still valuable because of this factor.

New Hotness

Lastly, if a card is new, its going to be hot. Just like real sports cards, if you pull the new card, minus a sig, its worth considering a trade to all the people who are impatient like me. Dont sit on a card and wait for the value to increase. Most of the time it will not. As for more than normal, though – you dont want to give up a valuable new card for nothing. As for the moon and settle for the stars.

New Inserts Unrwapped – 4/23

Two big inserts were released today, including the card celebrating the recent history made by Albert Pujols. Here is my take on it.

SR 500 HR Commemorative Card – Albert Pujols

photo1

Collectability: Strong
Playability: CaptureCaptureCapture

I really think this is a cool card, and I bought a couple of bundles trying to pull one. I failed, of course, but I am going to try to chase down a copy once they are a bit more available. Since you don’t need to buy the 7th inning stretch packs to get one, this is a really available card that comes with a 500 coin reward. Odds are 1-500 +insert packs.

Signature Series – Ryan Braun 350 level SR

photo12

Collectability: Extreme
Playability: CaptureCapture

I was a bit shocked to see Braun get a sig amid the controversy, but it wont affect the collectability likely. The card is a 350 copy sig, which puts it above Verlander and below Andrew McCutchen in terms of rarity. I think that once all 30 are released, this should end up being on the rarer side. Its worth it to pick up soon before it goes sold out.

There are a lot of inserts scheduled for this week based on what we have been seeing over the last few days, so don’t fret if you hit a dry spell in your packs. There will be lots to chase.

Sig Crazy: My List of Suggestions by Team

Topps has said on a number of occasions that the signature series would be coming to each team in some way. Here is how I would do it by team, for all those who dont already have one:

AL Central

  • Indians – Nick Swisher (done)
  • White Sox – Jose Abreu – I think Abreu has the most potential to be a popular sig as a new player and someone who doesnt have a lot of cards in the game yet. A good hitter and a playable card.
  • Tigers – Justin Verlander (done)
  • Twins – Joe Mauer – Not many players on the Twins that have notoriety enough to have an insert. Mauer is the guy.
  • Royals – James Shields – Another playable insert on a team with very little star power

AL East

  • Yankees – Derek Jeter (done) – I could also see other players from the Yankees come through in the sig series because of popularity.
  • Red Sox – David Ortiz – Although he has already had a sig, I expect him to be the face of the team again. Pedroia is also another option
  • Rays – David Price – This is a dream pick, even though I think Longoria will get the sig.
  • Orioles – Adam Jones – equal consideration for Chris Davis or Manny Machado, but Jones is my pick.
  • Blue Jays – Jose Bautista – Not many people on the team worthy of getting a sig, but Jose is definitely up there. Dont think Toronto has had a sig at all yet.

AL West

  • Angels – Mike Trout (done) – dont count out a signature or big card from Pujols’ 500th.
  • Mariners – Felix Hernandez – I would hope this is the signature, but Cano is also a strong possibility.
  • Athletics – Yoenis Cespedes – Oakland has made a name with no names. Its crazy. Cespedes is a great pick.
  • Rangers – Yu Darvish – Darvish already has a sig, but this is likely the pick and the right one.
  • Astros – Jose Altuve – They may be one of the worst teams in the league, but I dont know who else to pick.

NL Central

  • Brewers – Carlos Gomez – I would love to see him get a sig. That would be interesting. Definitely has lots of personality.
  • Cardinals – Three Matts – Triple sig of Holliday, Carpenter and Adams – MEGA MATT ASSEMBLE!
  • Reds – Johnny Cueto – Serious consideration for Joey Votto, but I think Cueto is a better pick.
  • Pirates – Andrew McCutchen (done)
  • Cubs – Anthony Rizzo – I think he is a very playable card and a great guy to have a sig.

NL East

  • Braves – Julio Teheran – Although Heyward and Freeman are a bigger names, it would be cool if Julio got his due.
  • Nationals – Stephen Strasburg – He will come around and start pitching well, I hope.
  • Mets – David Wright – He is one of the game’s ambassadors, and is a Topps favorite.
  • Phillies – Ryan Howard – Having a great season and I would guess he gets the sig.
  • Marlins – Jose Fernandez – Would also like a Giancarlo Stanton sig, but JoFer is one of the best pitchers in the game.

NL West

  • Padres – Andrew Cashner – Not a lot of star power, and Cashner is a great pitcher.
  • Dodgers – Matt Kemp – He has no other cards yet, and Puig already has a sig.
  • Rockies – Troy Tulowitzki – Although there are some other players, Tulo is the most worthy.
  • Diamondbacks – Paul Goldschmidt – I cant name many of their players, but Goldy is a star.
  • Giants – Buster Posey – Already has a sig, but I am guessing he will get another.

Again, these are just my picks, feel free to disagree. As we have seen with Swish, there is always room for off the wall kind of picks. Not every one of these will be obvious, and I think that keeps things interesting. There will also be other sigs besides this, and I hope that each fan gets to chase their team’s official one.

Game Tip of the Day – 4/23

Anytime you have a digital game, you know there will be multiple elements to the gameplay. One of the best things about BUNT is that there is a tremendously active community to engage with. Even better, many of the Topps employees behind the game love to interact through all the different social media mediums that are available.

Through these outlets, its easy to keep up with happenings in the game, giveaways and other tips and tricks. Its also a good source to hear if other users are having the same questions and concerns.

Here are all the links you need to stay up to date:

  • Twitter – @ToppsBUNT – main twitter handle – Lots of great info about sales, new cards and giveaways.
  • Instagram – @officialtoppsbunt – pictures from upcoming sets, sales and info about the game
  • YouTube –  Topps BUNT – A place where they post commercials and new tips and explanations for new users
  • Facebook – Topps BUNT – More information, more giveaways, and lots of community users interacting about the game.

There are other people to follow like @toppsmike on twitter, and of course me @scuncensored, but these four outlets should give you a lot of options to stay informed on what is going on without having to miss out.
