Huddle Gridiron Tip of the Day: Ranking Marathon Inserts (So Far)

I cant say this enough. I love Huddle this year, and I have been floored by the design quality and awesome ideas for inserts. The marathons have been a main attraction so far, and I wanted to take some time to put down my thoughts on how I see them shaking out.

Number 1 – Topps Limited

Capture

Rarity Factor: Extreme
Value Factor: Extreme
Award Factor: N/A
Design “Cool” Factor: Extreme

From what it looks like, Limited should end up being the rarest insert again this year, with very low counts on the regular card (jersey number card count), and the variant. I love, love, love the design, and I see it being one of the most valuable inserts in the game – period. The only draw back is that the variant cards will not have a marathon award. That could hurt value slightly. Based on card counts for other marathons, rarity should be more than enough to overcome.

Number 2 – Signature Series

Rarity Factor: TBD
Value Factor: High
Award Factor: TBD
Design “Cool” Factor: TBD

Even though it will end up being a week behind all the other marathons, it wont matter. People will chase these sigs like nothing else. Hopefully with the week gap, we will get more than one in the coming week, but there is no doubt in my mind that these will be the top marathon that is readily available.

Number 3 – Relic

5

Rarity Factor: High
Value Factor: Very Good
Award Factor: Very Good
Design “Cool” Factor: Extreme

I love the look of the relics this year. I think its a cool concept with a low count rarity, so they will be in demand. Sigs and Relics should end up having all the top player quality for the checklist, which will help value tremendously. The only issue is that both versions have the same counts, and its clear that the road version isnt as popular based on how many are already in circulation.

Number 4 – Turn Back the Clock

3

Rarity Factor: Good
Value Factor: Good
Award Factor: Very Good
Design “Cool” Factor: Extreme

Easily one of the best marathon designs so far. I love the concept, I love the look, and I think the insert should incite nostalgia that will go a long way with collectors. I have stocked up heavily on these cards, as people are undervaluing them in my opinion. Cant wait to see the next cards in the series.

Number 5 – Die Cut

1

Rarity Factor: Very Good
Value Factor: Good
Award Factor: Very Good
Design “Cool” Factor: High

If you want to get a preview of the checklist, this is a digitization from 2015 Bowman Football. There are some good names that should be coming, and I am someone who really is a fan of the die cut nature of cards in the app. The issue is that die cuts are a hit and miss concept with some users, and that could impact the long term value of this set.

Number 6 – Parallax

4

Rarity Factor: Very Good
Value Factor: Good
Award Factor: Very Good
Design “Cool” Factor: Very Good

I was beyond excited when I saw that they were making a Parallax marathon, which is surprising when you see how much work has to go into making the effect work compared to a normal card. Jeremy Hill is a bit of a dud when it comes to a popular player to start things off, and that hurt things. Although he is a good player, he isnt on the same level as Wilson, Brady, Manning, Romo, etc.

Number 7 – Topps Tandem

6

Rarity Factor: Good
Value Factor: Good
Award Factor: Very Good
Design “Cool” Factor: Very Good

I think Tandem has potential to be a great set as things move on, but the release structure is a bit limiting in the availability of both cards. This means its more difficult to collect the whole marathon, which may turn people off. However, because two players can be featured in the set, doing a marquee pair will definitely add value to the card set.

Number 8 – Rising Stars

7

Rarity Factor: Good
Value Factor: Good
Award Factor: Good
Design “Cool” Factor: Good

This has been a concept in Huddle since last year, and for the second year in a row, I wish the design was a bit more dynamic. Its definitely a good looking card, but when you see the other marathons out there, its not on that level to me. Also, these will be rookies, which means they might not be as established as the checklist for some of the other marathons.

Number 9 – Mystery Card

8

Rarity Factor: Varies
Value Factor: Low
Award Factor: Good
Design “Cool” Factor: Low

Im going to come out and say right now that I dont like the Mystery Card design at all. Despite the fact that the player selection last week was top quality, these are not trading well at all. The top and bottom part of the card obscure too much of the card surface, and it limits what could have been a great looking futuristic theme.

There is no doubt that more marathon cards are on the way, and I am excited to see how they turn out. If this first group is any indication, we are totally in for an epic season.

Bunt Tip of the Day: Prepping for the Post Season Run

Ahhhhh yes. The time of year where baseball really gets interesting, and everyone in Bunt starts to feel that bittersweet pull from the season coming to a close. Hard to believe we are already getting to this point, but its time to start getting ready for the playoffs. The earlier you start, the easier it will be to navigate the landscape created when everyone starts going nuts.

Predictions For Contests

I would be lying if I said that I played very much more than the 10k challenge most days this year, and from what it looks like, most people probably feel the same way. That being said, we should all assume that things will  ratchet up considerably for the playoffs. If I were a betting man, my money would go on a ton of awesome contests that will be built around the playoffs, likely with some awesome prizes along the way.

TOPPSMIKE has said on numerous occasions that it hasnt gone the way they had all hoped, and playoff contest structure is a way they might be able to redeem that a bit. Over the last few years, the post season brings people back to Bunt in a big way, and hopefully they will find a method to improve contest experiences from day one.

Building Your Lineup

Right now, playoff races in both leagues are about as solid as Jello right after you pour the mix into the water. That being said, there are some relatively sure things that you can bet on. The Royals, Mets, Cardinals and Dodgers all look to be firmly in control, and will likely avoid playing in the one game playoff. Stocking up your deck with cards from these teams is a REALLY good play.

2

Because everything will be nationally televised, stock up on the hitters and the pitchers, as you will be able to watch every minute of the games pretty easily. You do not want to be the guy who only has pitchers when Lucas Duda hits a 3 run bomb. Trading up for those golds now will help to avoid price gouging once people figure out the final slate of teams.

Playoff cards will be coming, and I wouldnt hesitate to say they could be readily available when they do, but that doesnt mean your other nice cards for the playoff teams will be worthless to keep.

Also keep in mind there is a VERY small chance that any 2015 Bunt Card will be able to score points in 2016, which means open season on those other cards you arent attached to.

Wild Card Letdown

With a one game playoff before the Divisional series, it can leave a large portion of your preparation nerfed if that team goes down. Let me say up front, in a one game playoff ANYTHING can happen. Its good to play the odds, and go with the better team, but that doesnt always work. If a player is part of a wild card team, be careful in stocking up over a guy from another team that is locked into the non-wild card series. I got burned last year pretty bad on this, and I would hate for anyone to be in the same position.

Playoff Card Releases

Last year, there was a MASSIVE set of playoff cards released for every team. Boost levels were also drastically inflated, which led to a number of issues with the way regular season cards were played.

For 2015, I dont think this formula is going to be in play as much, or at the very least the distribution method. With guaranteed insert per pack releases becoming more of a standard thing, I could see that being used for the playoff cards. I also dont see the huge boosts coming back for cards that arent “game only” variety. There may be a slight inflation, but Im not sure I would think that  it will go the same direction as 2014.

With collecting becoming a larger focus this year, I would also expect more insert sets that are commemorating current playoff successes as well as a number of cards that celebrate the past history of MLB’s post season. Hopefully the Parallax cards and other big inserts that were huge last year come back. I really liked the way they did so many amazing cards right in a row.

3

Bottom line, the post season is as big a time for Bunt as any event during the season, and they will adapt the app to foster the excitement everyone is already feeling. Although my team might or might not be making an appearance, I will definitely be paying attention very closely.

Huddle New User Tips: Mastering the Art of Trading

As with every Topps app, the community trading aspect is a huge part of what makes the app so attractive. It allows users to improve or turn over their collections through interactions with other players, with an opportunity to customize their own experience through the different ways trading occurs.

Want to be a someone that focuses on collecting every insert there is? Trading is a huge help. Want to be someone that focuses on being the top contest player? Trading is a way to hone your collection to be the best.

The main issues is that trading is an art form, and understanding the card economy and unwritten rules of the community can be a daunting task. So much of an overwhelming experience that I would guess that a large portion of user attrition can be attributed to how little instruction is out there on how to survive and learn.

Im going to do my best to explain it the best I can, but let me be perfectly transparent here in saying that there is not really a way to put into words the amount of information that is needed to be successful. You really just need to power through it and learn through experience. The best thing to do is not get frustrated, and write off the situations you encounter as learning. Dont worry, after a week you will feel like you know whats going on. That’s how it was for me.

Starting Trades

IMG_2161

There are a number of ways to start trades in the app, but there are two ways that are really the best for certain types of situations. Each has its pros and cons, and each should be used to build within the app.

  • Fan Feed – From the home screen, scroll to the bottom and click the word bubble labeled fan feed. This is a continuous scrolling thread of user messages that detail what they are looking for.
  • Card Sheet Trading – From the “All Cards” sheet, any card selected can be brought into a trade and sent to users who own the card. Ill refer to this as “blind trading.”

I do a lot of trading both ways, and its clear that most people have a preference for the way they operate. I think that there are a lot of people who want to avoid trading as much as they can, which I think is a mistake. Trading is not only a way to save money, but also have fun. Without trading, the cost to obtain sets is exponentially higher.

To start a fan feed trade, go to the feed, click on someone’s name, and it should bring up the user menu. From there, select “offer trade” and that should start the trade interface, which is pretty easy to navigate. I would also read up on card sheet filters, as it will give you an edge to sort easily. The search box at the top of the offer card sheet is also a huge help, as it should be obvious that the amount of cards will eventually reach gargantuan levels.

IMG_2159

Once the trade interface is launched, you can double click on any card to add to the offer. The cards you are looking to receive will be the first window. The second window will be the cards you are giving. Each card will have an indicator of how many you have or if it is one you need.

NOTE: The amount of times the card appears in the “Add Cards Here” part of the trade screen is how many of that card you are offering or receiving. Even if it says “x5” or something similar, you are not offering all five unless there are 5 copies pictured in the ACH section of the inteface.

Once you have selected what you will get and give, you will be taken to the trade overview screen. At this point you can add a message that will accompany your offer. If you forget to add a message, you add it at any time from your pending trade screen.

NOTE: If you ever need to communicate with a user in the game directly, the best thing is to offer a trade with the same card in the give and receive, and include a message. This serves as a “direct message” type of function, since accepting the trade will not impact either user.

IMG_2163

To execute a blind trade, go to the main card sheet under “All Cards” and find the card you want to acquire. You can only offer on one card at a time, so you will not be able to add multiple cards into the “receive” part of the trade. You will be able to offer multiple cards to get that one you want, however.

Bring the card into your spotlight by clicking on it, and select the trade icon at the bottom of the screen. This will bring up the trade interface with that card in the receive, and after you move to your side, you can select the cards you are willing to give up. Instead of going to the trade overview screen, it will bring up a list of users who have that card available for trade. On that list of users, any of the people on your friends list will be listed as well as a random selection of users who also have the card.

Once you select up to five users, you will be able to go to the trade overview screen to complete the offer. It will then add those trades to your pending box.

Understanding the Trade Economy

When you are looking to trade, you will obviously be asking someone for something they own, in exchange for something you own. Just like any barter based economy, value is extremely important, but also extremely subjective. Keep in mind that just because something isnt valuable to you, doesnt mean it isnt valuable to them, and vice-a-versa.

Even more important, the app showing that someone needs a card COULD impact the person’s desire to acquire it, but not always. Need does not always equal want. Also, just because someone has one, doesnt always mean they dont want more. Keep that in mind, as having dupes of a nice card isnt always a bad thing.

With the app in general, you will need to start from the bottom and work your way up. Think of this like earning your stripes. Although its possible to hit the jackpot ripping packs, its better to build a good foundation through trading and pad your collection with a lucky pack here and there.

What I mean is that it is NOT a good idea to think that you will be able to trade the common cards from starter packs for the top inserts in the game. Ill talk about why that is the case in a second, but as a whole, you will need to trade your way up.

There are two types of cards in the game, and each of the two types has multiple sub types within them.

  • Base – any card that is regularly available in packs and uses the 2015 Topps design
  • Insert – any card that is limited in packs, and can use any number of designs

Ill start with the base, because the economy is almost built in. Basically, each base parallel has a rarity associated with it, which also corresponds with the boost level. Golds, being the rarest, have the highest boost at 2x for scoring points in contests. Whites, being the most common, score at 1x for scoring points in contests. You can see the rarity levels in the store when buying packs. It should also indicate that you really shouldnt be able to trade a common white base card straight up for a gold.

In most cases, trading base consists of player quality and parallel level. You might be able to trade Aaron Rodgers common card for a player that isnt on the same elite level in a different rarity. I usually expect 3-4 whites for a green, 2-3 greens for a red, 2-3 reds for a blue, and 2-3 blues for a gold, all things being equal.

NOTE: Because there are awards for completing the sets, people will likely not trade their single copies of a base card very easily, even if you are overpaying.

Like the base cards, insert cards have a varying level of rarity. In addition, player quality and card type have a big impact on the trade value.

  • Marathon Inserts: Cards released once per week that provide awards for collecting the set over the course of the season (sigs, relics, Parallax, etc)
  • Weekly Inserts: Cards released once per day over the course over a short period of time that provide awards for completing the set
  • One off inserts: Cards released per the needs of the game that are meant to be standalone releases

Topps has structured their releases this way to create value in the better cards, mainly dictated by performance over previous years and performance in the other apps. Marathon inserts will likely always carry more value than weekly inserts, even if their card counts are higher, as the user base has assigned group value to the cards historically. A perfect example of this is Signature Series cards, which have always been the king of the mountain for everything in Topps’ digital card apps.  A signature series or “sig” will always retain more value at a high count than a weekly insert will at a low count. Do not expect to trade a 200 count weekly insert for a 400 count sig, unless extenuating circumstances are at play.

The same thing will go for new cards versus older cards, and cards with an active reward versus dead cards with no reward in play. New hotness drives trade economy for every set, as the set collectors will need it for their collection, and will likely not value older cards they already have as much. This adds a huge amount of value to recently released cards, and showcases exactly why everyone always runs to rip packs when new cards hit the sheet.

Trading base for inserts is a tough thing to explain, mainly because it all depends on who you are trading with. High count non-marathon inserts can be had for base if you own gold cards of the elite players people are trying to stock up on.

I always think of trading in a red paperclip sort of fashion. Start with junk, trade the junk for more junk plus a little bit, so on and so forth until you can eventually trade your hoard of junk for something small of worth. Then take that small bit of worth and trade it for a small bit of worth plus a little bit. Eventually you will make your way to having a lot of good stuff when you started with nothing.

Making Offers

As a rule, the person making the offer has no leverage – especially on rare cards. This means the need to overpay in trade value is expected. When someone has something of worth – ANYTHING OF WORTH – they will get multiple offers. If you are unwilling to overpay to get it, someone else will. This means that leverage almost always resides with the person receiving the offers.

In blind trades explained above, this is magnified in a huge way, because most of the time, the offer is completely unsolicited. Think of it as making cold calls, which means overpaying is not just expected, its required.

You will get the hang of value as your experience moves on, but I will let you know the game’s trade economy is one of the most volatile markets I have ever witnessed. Even the smallest adjustment in the game can send a tidal wave through the economy, sometimes in very unexpected fashions.

Soliciting Offers On The Feed

If you want to post on the fan feed, be aware that you will be one of a lot of people doing so at any given second of the day. Posting once will likely not get your message across, as it will likely get lost in the hundreds of posts per minute that occur. Because the spam filter only allows one post every 30 seconds, you will need to post your message at least a few times to ensure enough people see it.

IMG_2162

There are two types of messages you can post on the feed, both will receive different types of responses.

  • Open ended trade requests – I have a lot of stuff and I am looking for a lot of stuff, so send me an offer and ill see if its something that catches my eye
  • Specific trade requests – I need this one card, I have this stuff to trade for it

The open ended requests will have a lot more response than the specific ones, and you will likely get much more bang for your buck if you have something that someone will want. I have had a ton of success with open ended offers, especially when I have that one card that one person needs, and they offer a collection to get it.

Considering that overpaying is necessary in many cases, that is not a license to be a jerk about it, unless you really want to be. When I say overpay, I mean a tad more than one would expect if you were on the other side of things. If someone gives you a good trade, its in your best interest to accept, rather than counter and ask for more. Take the bird in hand, rather than risking the two in the bush.

Similarly, there is definitely a negative side to sending terrible offers. You could easily get ignored by the person you are trading with, which is a really bad thing if that person has a lot of cards you want. That means they will not see your offers unless they specifically want to, and if they are in the fan feed a lot, you will not have that outlet any longer. If you ever have a question about what you have to offer for someone with a card you want, send a same card trade with a message and ask them. It gives them the opportunity to tell you if your goods are even worth considering an offer.

A good indicator of the strength of the offers you make is your trader rating, which will drop drastically if you are not making offers people like. Because the indicator is anonymous, they can rate you with impunity, and though there are no penalties for a bad trader score, it is a good measure of how well you understand value.

Understanding Collection Score

In all honesty, your chops as a collector can be measured by your collection score. It is a live look at how your cards compare to the rest of the user base in the app. It will change frequently, and the better your collection is, the better your score will be. It will also help you to understand the users in the feed, and how much they have to offer when you are looking for certain cards.

  • 50 and below – new users who have not yet gotten much in their collection
  • 51-70 – users who have been around for a while, but dont have much volume or many top cards
  • 71-89 – users who are established, but dont have the insane volume that some whales have
  • 90+ – top users who have the best collections around, and have likely been around for many years. These “whales” are also likely top spenders in the game

If you are trading with people who are 90 and above, or even 80 and above, there might not be much you have that they need. If your collection score is low, they may also see you as a annoyance rather than a worthwhile trading partner. Just be aware that they have the means to be a top collector, and likely dont need you. Its different if they are actively soliciting on the feed, but dont use their collection’s mass to try to rob them. They will understand the intricacies of the market, but will not give up their goods just because you have something they need. Having a lot does not at all mean that they will give that up for nothing. It also might mean that if they DONT have a card, its for a reason.

There is a ton more to write about this subject, and I realize this is just the beginning. More to come as more about the trade economy gets settled over the next few weeks.

SWCT Force Tip of the Day: Are Force Awakens Cards the New Marathons?

The last 11 days have been a whirlwind of amazing looking content based on the upcoming movie release. I have loved every minute of it, as each card seems to be cooler than the one released right before it. With the movie still months away, im curious how the app will continue to build on the concept. The cards released have been extremely valuable, only heightened by how quickly they sell out. With Marathons wrapping up in the next month, its goes without saying that something will need to happen. Are these cards strong enough to be a replacement?

CaptureCapture

As a whole, Marathon cards have dropped in value since the third leg began. Many collectors are likely saying, “Well, if I dont have the cards now, its not worth chasing them down,” and that has hurt things for all the new users who came on board during that time frame. With tens of thousands of users on the hunt, and only a few thousand with any complete marathon set, its clear that the release of the Force Awakens cards is a new chase that everyone can love.

Additionally, it helps that the characters from the movie seem to be fully baked even before the film hits theaters. I feel like I know a lot about Kylo Ren, Finn, and Rey, even though we only have bits and pieces of their backstories. The Villains have always driven the franchise, and though people were complaining about the structure of his broadsword weapon, Kylo Ren is definitely cool in every way.

Capture

As for the content itself, most of it is based off of existing artwork and publicity from Force Friday and marketing materials. It should come as no surprise that everything looks as good as it does, because since the 1980s, that is what has made Star Wars into a global powerhouse license. Lucasfilms has a stable of companies on their license that create some AMAZING looking promotional materials, and its great that SWCT is taking advantage. This movie will be used everywhere from soup cans to baseball games, which means that the content has to be top quality. So far, it has been.

Capture

Here is the thing. We are all playing a risky game with this stuff, as there is a chance that the movie could turn out to be absolutely awful. JJ Abrams, in my opinion, RARELY fails at making entertaining films, so the track record should speak for itself. However, this is a treasured franchise, and that means rabid fans who will criticize every last minute of the movie. Im just hoping it turns out to be as awesome as we think it will be. If its not, the value of the cards could drop to match the reaction of moviegoers, but I dont think we are close to that point yet.

For right now, just bask in the glory that an insert can be released and sell out the same day, and that every card has been as awesome as it has been. We know there is more to come, and its only a matter of time before we get a full picture of what life is like after the original marathons are complete.

Monday Night Opening Throwdown: Breaking Down Game Only Boosts!

Its here! The first Monday night of the season, and as a Vikings fan, I could not be more excited. Of course I have to wait until like 5am for the game to start, but I digress. Here are some quick thoughts on some of the game only boosts for the games tonight.

2

GAME ONE – EAGLES vs FALCONS

Sam Bradford – QB, Eagles

Here is the thing, Bradford wasnt one of the five players from the Eagles that was selected to have a series one base card, so this card is going to be pretty valuable until he gets a card. The Eagles are going to score a lot of points all season, and Bradford is a good play if he can stay healthy. The issue is that all his receivers ALSO have GO Boosts and that makes this card less of a play over those. Either way, this is probably the best to get just because of overall value.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Demarco Murray – RB, Eagles

This guy was a BEAST last year, if not only because the Cowboys’ OLine was so good. This is his chance to show he was worth the money, as he will get a chance to show everyone what he has away from Big D. The Eagles have a good line too, so we will see what Chip wants to do with the position. He will not get all the carries as there are two other capable backs who will need touches too. One of only a few drawbacks.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Nelson Agholor – WR, Eagles

Another guy who has no other cards that play this year. He had a good looking preseason, and looks primed to take over where a departed Jeremy Maclin left off. Not a bad card to pick up some dupes of to use later on.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Matt Ryan- QB, Falcons

The Falcons were not a good team last year. The issue was that injuries really hurt them, especially with Julio Jones going down and Roddy White getting banged up. They are back and 100% this year, and that will determine how well they play. Ryan can put up a 4TD game when he is on, but he can also completely bomb when he has a bad night. Going to be interesting to see what he can do tonight.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Julio Jones – WR, Falcons

Of all the guys that needs to play well tonight, Julio GET THE STRETCH! I think he could end up having a big game, especially if they are playing from behind and have to throw a ton. I love what he brings to the field, as his combination of speed and possession ability is definitely among the best in the league.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

GAME TWO – VIKINGS VS 49ERS

Adrian Peterson – RB, Vikings

Capture

Yes, yes, he is a monster and a horrible person. That being said, I want him back on the field. The Vikings are a team that are in desperate need of his services, especially with Teddy Bridgewater playing as well as he is. With the 49ers defense absolutely destroyed over the offseason, AP could have a huge night. However, he has never played well against San Fran, and his offensive line is in rough shape.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Teddy Bridgewater – QB, Vikings

1

Of all the preseason stats, Bridgewater’s definitely looked among the most impressive. Very efficient, very protective of the ball, all of the above. If he can put it together like he did in the last 6-8 games of the year last year, look out. He is a good pickup as two of his favorite receivers have no cards – Kyle Rudolph and Jarius Wright.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Charles Johnson – WR, Vikings

I love his game. I love his approach, and I think he is completely underrated. That being said, he has no other cards in the game, period. That makes this a good pickup to use when the Vikings eventually play on a Thursday. I doubt he will get a base card otherwise.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Colin Kaepernick – QB, 49ers

I was a Kaep fan until I saw how he played last year. No one had more trouble backing up greatness like he did last year. Complete downward spiral. He is also playing a Mike Zimmer defense this week, which could spell disaster. His only true saving grace is that the Vikings RARELY play well on national TV.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Anquan Boldin – WR, 49ers

Since his days in Phoenix, I have always admired his skill in the absence of breakaway speed. He has never been the fastest guy on the field, but he has always found a way to get it done. Im thinking he could play very well tonight, but it all depends on Torrey Smith’s transition. Also depends how Kaep plays.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Ill be online all night chasing down the Vikings cards, and having fun playing along. Dont hesitate to reach out if you want to trade or if you have questions. If you are new, do not miss my article from today about scoring and contests.

Lets ROCK AND ROLL!

Huddle New User Tip – Contests and Playing For Points

When you sign into Huddle, the game can seem daunting, no doubt about it. The great thing about the game is that it is meant to be highly interactive, so its in your best interest to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible.

Today I want to dive very deep into contests and scoring, hopefully to shed some light for people who arent as familiar with how to play along with the live games.

Setting Up

First off, if you only have access to NFL.com and the main games on national TV, you will not be as successful as someone who has Sunday Ticket, or spends their Sunday in a bar. Red Zone channel is a huddler’s best friend, and without it, it will be tough to play beat someone who has both.

I will always pay more attention to Red Zone than my tablet with the NFL.com feed, as the API that runs NFL.com or ESPN.com will never be live. The reason this is so important is because it will allow you to get your cards into your lineup more efficiently before points hit the app. Ill get to that in a second.

Starting Your Quest

The contest screen is the home base. Clicking on the oddly positioned dueling helmets will take you to the screen.

IMG_2144

Here is what everything means.

  • Join Now – Contests that are available for you to join
  • Starting Soon – Contests you have entered
  • In progress – Contests where games are already going
  • History – Completed contests that you have joined

IMG_2145

Starting with the Join Now screen, you should pick a contest or contests that you feel comfortable in playing. As of week 1, there are contests for each night game on Monday and Thursday night, as well as 4 contests on Sunday. You can play in all of them if you would like, but I will warn you that it will be hard to manage two lineups at once. For a rookie player, I would stick to one at a time.

Its the easiest to play in the segmented contests, as they dont force you to participate ALL through Sunday. For Week one, I played in each of the segmented contests, with extreme focus on the noon games. I didnt play as much with the afternoon games, as we had stuff to do. I also played the night game contest, which is by far the easiest to manage, but also most competitive.

Once you figure out which contest to join, click on the contest from the menu to bring it up. Click join contest to get going. This will change the view so you can see the screen that will be home base for that contest.

The most important piece of the contest is your starting lineup which is at the top of the main contest screen now that you have joined. Click on that section of the page to bring it up, and it should take you to the play screen. This is where all the action for the game takes place, and you should memorize how to get back to this screen as fast as possible.

Lineups

Huddle has a great set up that allows you to play thousands of times more than a normal fantasy lineup. You do not want to set your lineup and forget about it, unless you cant physically follow along with the games. You will need to switch out your lineup hundreds of times to be a top player, something that makes this game insanely addictive.

IMG_2146Capture

Its important to keep in mind that players will ONLY score points if they are in your lineup at the time the API loads the plays into the app. Right now, the app runs a few minutes behind live, maybe 5-10 plays in real time. So, if you are following along live like mentioned above, you will have time to load cards for a desired scoring play before it hits the app. If the player is on your bench when the points hit, you are out of luck.

To put a card into your lineup, go to the play screen, and from your cards pictured below, double click any card you want to add. If you have a bunch of other cards in play, it will overwrite your previous lineup automatically. If you want to start from scratch each time you load your cards (which I highly recommend if you have time), hit remove all.

NOTE: You can repeatedly hit the refresh lineup button from the play page to see if your points have accumulated. Once they have, move onto the next lineup you want to load for a particular scoring play. DO NOT SWITCH your lineup until points hit, unless you are comfortable missing those.

For any lineup, you can play up to 11 of any card, or combination of cards. So, if you have 11 Tom Brady cards, and he is the person you want to play, you should put all 11 in your lineup, starting with the top boosted card.

As a whole, for any given play, here are the best cards to play.

ANY PASSING PLAY – Play the person who caught the ball before playing QBs. Then play QBs. Receiving yards are worth more per play than passing yards. If you have neither QB nor Receiver to play, you can also play the defender who tackled the receiver.

ANY RUSHING PLAY – Obviously, play the running back first. If you dont have the running back, you can play the defender who tackled the rusher.

ANY INTERCEPTION – Make sure you remove the QB from your lineup, because they will lose points for an interception that could wreck things. Switch in the defender who caught the ball. Do not play the person who tackled the guy who intercepted the ball.

ANY SACK OR SACK FUMBLE: ALWAYS play the guy who sacked the QB and recorded the forced fumble, NOT the guy who recovered the fumble, unless it is a touchdown. Then play whomever ended up scoring.

RETURNS: Kick returns and Punt returns score points. You can also play the guy who tackled the returner.

Game Only Boosts

If Huddle has game only boosts released, they are a good idea to try to get. You want to make sure that you are aware that these boosts will only be good for one day, so dont break the bank in trading for them or buying packs. That being said, some are better than none, trust me.

These cards will score at a higher rate than the highest boost level available in the game, up to and including huge amounts of additional scoring potential. They are available in special packs on all game days.

Prizes

You will not automatically be awarded your prize if you place in any contest. You have to go into the contest main screen, go to history, select the contest you played in and hit “claim.” This will add the coins from that contest into your account.

What does it take to win?

To win a contest, you need to have a lot of firepower. A LOT. The top player in each contest will score tens of thousands of points, so if you cant generate that with the cards you own, its going to be very difficult to win.

That doesnt mean the contest isnt worth playing, as there are prizes for basically everyone who plays. Any coins help, so dont sleep on these contests, especially with how little effort it takes to get something from them.

Planning Ahead

The nationally televised games arent a secret. You should plan ahead and stock up for teams that play more than just the mandatory Thursday game that everyone gets. Usually the better teams get a lot of national games, so that means their base and boosts should carry more value to your collection.

The app functions on a mentality that HEAVILY overvalues that day’s games, and I would do everything in your power to set up your lineup ahead of that timeframe. Dont get caught in the rush. You will overpay for cards you could have gotten cheaper had you planned ahead.

Huddle NFL Unwrapped: Breaking Down the First Inserts of the Year

With each day that passes, it becomes more and more clear how awesome Huddle is now that they are fully licensed. I mentioned a few times last year how much their design team was able to accomplish with what they had, and its clear that the talent will go far with what they have already shown.

There will be an absolute ton of inserts on the way, and to help you stay ahead of the game, I have created a checklist that will be updated every day.

2015/16 Huddle Checklist and Insert Tracker – Bookmark for Easy Access!

This checklist will serve to be your edge to collecting the sets and tracking inserts for your favorite team and player.

Turn Back the Clock Series

COvwDpSUsAAigi_

This looks to be the equivalent of Fresh Faces, but with an NFL twist. Using the players that have been around to have a turn back the clock card, this is going to be quite the clutch set. I can see Brady, Lynch, Peterson and other multi year veterans getting the spotlight, but there is no better starting point than Peyton Manning. The design looks great, the card series theme is great, and the value should be pretty great until some lower count inserts hit the sheet.

Verdict: Touchdown

Tandem Series

Capture

I think the potential for this Marathon is huge. There are so many players I could see making this series awesome, and it only plays to the strength of the concept to be able to use two cards with each week. This will be a tough marathon to complete, but it might be the one that uses the most top players with two per release. I absolutely LOVE the design, as I think there was a big potential for this to look really goofy. The team did a great job.

Verdict: Field Goal

Mystery Card

COpOxDKUAAAm2R9

Although we dont know who the player is yet, I dont really like the look. When the doors open, it looks too much like the top and bottom borders will be WAY too big, obscuring over half the card. If this were designed more to look like blast doors, similar design but with smaller borders, this could have been a winner. We will have to see how it looks when the reveal happens today.

Verdict: Punt

Kickoff Series

COuqJQzUcAEim5V

This design is a digitization of 2014 Topps Prime, which was a great looking set to begin with. Full bleed with no borders presents a great opportunity to showcase more of the photos. Releasing these at one per pack was a great idea, as it really gives a lot more access to some of the better looking cards in circulation. For big sets like this, I am all for that format. When it is a 5 card set, not as much.

The biggest thing, of which we should all take heavy notice, is the usage of the Kickoff logo, which makes me so much more giddy than it should. Its an indicator that all NFL signage and logos will be all over this game as predicted, and that makes me EXTREMELY happy.

Verdict: Touchdown

1965 Mini Tallboy Retro Series

COuD2clUkAEpLX-

Topps uses this set in so many ways for their physical sets, as it is one of their most iconic designs ever created. One of the main reasons this set is so Iconic is because it was Joe Namath’s rookie card, and as a popular HOF player, many collectors went bananas over it. Digitizing this set seems to be the ultimate transition between the decades of physical sets and the digital apps, which are now just as important.

Verdict: Touchdown

Topps 60th Anniversary – 1974 Retro

COqplHHUYAAv2Q8

This is the first of many retro sets to celebrate Topps Football’s 60th anniversary, and I think this program is a perfect celebration. Although I wish they maybe had gone with a more distinct design from the vault, this is a cool example of how much the full license means to the app. Going to be cool to see where this goes.

Verdict: Field Goal

Bottom line, we are in for a treat this year as things move onward. Its clear that Topps is ready to go full steam ahead with investing incredible amounts of time into this app, and we havent even gotten to see the main inserts in the Sigs and Relics, which are likely coming. I cannot wait to see what the team is able to accomplish with the awesomeness that is definitely marching down the field in the next few days.

Huddle New User Tip – Understanding the Card Sheet and Card Structure

When you sign into Huddle, the game can seem daunting, no doubt about it. The great thing about the game is that it is meant to be highly interactive, so its in your best interest to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible.

The card sheet, which is the button on the bottom on the far left, is probably one of the most important areas of the game.

IMG_2107

Not only does it display your cards you own, but it can be used for making trades, seeing what’s available, and acquiring collecting targets. This is also the place where you can see statistics on the cards themselves, which are all extremely important aspects to the game.

Card Sheet Navigation – Sheet Filters

There are two sets of filters in the game, overall filters and card filters. These will determine which cards you want to see when you pull up the sheet. You will not be able to easily participate in the game without a good understanding of the way these work.

IMG_2109IMG_2111

The default overall filter is “MY CARDS” which you see at the top of the screen. This showcases all the cards that you have in your collection at the moment. If you click on the the label, it will give you other options. Here is what they all mean:

  • My Cards – All cards that match the filters you have set in your OWN collection
  • All Cards – All cards that match the filters you have set that are available in the whole game
  • My Locked Cards – All cards you have designated as not for trade using the lock feature (make sure to go to card filters and remove “cards I need”)
  • Checklist – A display of all cards in a text format instead of pictures

Once you pick the overall filter, its time to select your card filters. This is easily one of the more helpful features available, especially as the game releases many of the thousands of cards that will eventually be available.

IMG_2110

To edit your card filters, click the up and down arrows next to the magnifying glass on the top right.

SORTS:

  • Boost – Organizes the card sheet by which matching examples have the highest boost level in the game.
  • Team – Organizes the card sheet by team
  • Position – Organizes the card sheet by player position
  • Parallel – Organizes the card sheet two ways, first by which parallel each card is a part of, and secondarily by card count within a certain parallel (lowest count to highest). This is the sort I use the most.
  • Heat Index – Organizes the card sheet by players by scoring temperature. Higher scoring players who have scored well consistently will be at the top, colder players at the bottom.
  • Average game points: Organizes the card sheet by players who have the highest average point total down to the lowest.
  • Games: Organizes the card sheet by upcoming games, so that each team’s matching cards for that game will be separated out.
  • Duplicates: This only makes sense when viewing “My Cards” and sorts your collection by cards with the most duplicates.
  • Date Acquired: This only makes sense when viewing “My Cards” and sorts cards by the most recent acquisitions by trade or packs. If your game crashes during opening packs, the cards will still be deposited into your account. They will be visible at the top of this sort when you sign back in.

FILTERS:

  • Playing Now: Will remove all cards from view for players that are not currently on the field. All displayed cards will be actively scoring points.
  • Year: This is where older year cards can be added or filtered out of your list. My suggestion is to have only the 2015/16 cards visible unless you are actively looking for older cards.
  • Cards I need: This is only available on “All Cards” and will remove all cards that you already own. Any card you still need will be visible. This is great for determining which parts of a set you still need.

Using sorts and filters will eventually become a point of memorization, and dont hesitate to mess around and see what you can learn. You will find out pretty quickly which ones you want to use.

Sheet Sections

There are a few different sections of your sheet outside of the color of the base borders. This is where your cards will be organized and I want to do my best to explain all the different parts as they have been used up to this point.

  • Limited – Any released card that has a limited card count, including those that are sold out
  • Insert – Any released insert card that did or does not have a card count limit, including ones that are sold out
  • Award – Cards that are given out as rewards for completing sets, or provided to users outside of pulling them from packs
  • Not For Sale – Usually displays older year cards

Card Structure Explanation

Every part of any cards design is deliberate. It either showcases the boost or the set, and its helpful to understand what everything means. The front is the easiest to understand, as it displays the player and shows if it is base or insert.

IMG_2105

All base look exactly the same, they have the colored border with dots, and Huddle at the top. Different colors mean different things, which I will get to in a second. Inserts will look COMPLETELY different, and usually focus on a similar design that will match the other cards in the set.

The dots on the front of the base cards represent how much boost a card has. The more dots, the more boost. Golds have 5 dots and 2x, and it drops by .25 boost down to 1x in the commons.

Here is the breakdown:

  • Gold Border (Super Rare) – 2x, 5 dots
  • Blue Border (Scarce) – 1.7x, 4 dots
  • Red Border (Rare) – 1.5x, 3 dots
  • Green Border (Uncommon) – 1.2x, 2 dots
  • Gray Border (Common) – 1x, 1 dot

As larger boosts are released, more dots will show on the front of the base. Inserts do not usually have dots, and will just display the boost on the back of the card.

Cards can also have one of two labels applied in a red tag showing on the top right corner of the card. Sold out means that the card is no longer in packs and is only available through trades. Coming soon means that a card has not been made available yet, but might be in packs or given as an award shortly.

To flip a card over and see the back, touch the card to bring it into your spotlight view, and then touch the side. On the back, you will see some very important things, including past scoring, current scoring, boost and card count. Im going to skip scoring for now, but check back tomorrow for a more extensive explanation.

IMG_2113

The most important thing on the back of the card is the count, which represents the number of that card that is in circulation at that moment. Cards that are not sold out will continue to increase, and the count will update live. You will need to deselect the card and bring it back into your spotlight to update the card. Continuously flipping front to back will not update the count. Many base cards will never go sold out, but almost all inserts will. The card count is a good indicator of rarity as well, and lower counts will always be more valuable.

Locking Cards

This is a really popular feature on the game because it prevents anyone from offering trades on a card you want to designate as locked. To lock a card, bring the card into your spotlight by touching it on the sheet, and click the lock icon at the bottom. You can lock any card, up to 25 total.

You can make offers with your own locked cards in a trade, but no one will be able to make offers on the cards you have designated. If you send an offer with a locked card in a trade, any counter offer will remove the card from the deal. If you are posting that a card is for trade in the feed or articles, make sure it is unlocked or you will not receive any offers for it.

Trading from the Card Sheet

One of the great things that is available from the main “All Cards” sorted card sheet, is the opportunity to select and send “blind” offers on a card you are looking for. To do so, all you have to do is touch the card you want to bring it into your spotlight, and touch the trade icon.

This will bring up the standard trade process, where you can select which of your cards you are willing to give up. It will also bring up a list of users that have the card unlocked for trade.

Before making an offer on a card from the sheet, make sure the card has more than a 0 count on the back.

Huddle Gridiron Tip of the Day: Breaking Down Pack Ripping Strategy

Since I assume there will be a lot of new people to Huddle this year, I want to make sure I take some time to discuss some of the main elements of the game in depth. Today will mark the first ever NFL licensed insert release, which will likely be a few different sets that should make their debut. You will need to rip a lot of packs to pull the nicer cards, which means you should end up with a lot of base. Here are some tips.

Pack Structure

There are two types of packs, ones that are permanently available, and special packs created for insert sets and card releases. Each pack has a different structure, and its worth looking at which will be best to open at any given time.

Before opening any new pack, you have to look at a few different things:

  • Cost – Most packs cost about 5k coins. Anything below that will have reduced content, and anything above that should cost more for a reason.
  • Odds – When it comes to pulling the top cards, each comes with an article explaining how tough they are to pull. There are also percentages listed with each pack that detail the base card mix that is contained in each. Not every pack has access to Gold or Blue base, so make sure you are studying the percentages before diving in.
  • Content – Some packs will have guaranteed pulls, and may cost more. Others may have only a certain type of card, or a cards from a certain set. Just about every pack will have base content included, but it could vary based on the cost of the pack.

Overall, the most important thing to do with each new pack is to read the accompanying article. The article details everything one can expect, and it will give a lot of clues as to whether or not the pack is worth you spending coins on. Some inserts are extremely popular, which means that pack could disappear incredibly fast. You have to stay on your toes or you will miss out. Make sure you have push notifications turned on, and stay tuned to Twitter for announcements.

Insert Pack Releases

As mentioned above, each insert or insert set will have its own special packs. Some inserts like Signature Series or Limited Series will be insanely rare, so those packs will be mostly base.

My main words of advice focus on not getting frustrated if you dont pull inserts in every pack. Unless stated, many set pieces will be hard pulls, and may take a ton of packs before you even can track down one. There have been times where a sig hits the store, I rip through hundreds of thousands of coins, and come up empty. Its the way things go, and one of the main reasons why the cards are as valuable as they are.

If you are not planning on spending money in the game, or spending very little money, make sure you spend your coins as wisely as you can. Ripping sig packs on 10k per day is a good way to burn through your coins with not much return. Stick to building your collection through trades and opening the standard packs, which give you much more bang for your buck. Jump on those insert packs that have low odds and a higher chance to pull the nicer cards. There will be sets that guarantee an insert per pack, or maybe every other pack. That is your time to shine.

Base Packs

There are packs currently in the store that will likely be there all season long. For 5000 coins, you can get the Touchdown pack, which has all levels of base, and may eventually include some inserts.

As a point of awesomeness, the golds and blues are more readily available than they are in Star Wars or Bunt, as these 5k packs have a good mix – at least for now. These packs are great if you are looking to get some nice trade bait.

At 1% the Golds are VERY tough to get, maybe one every 10-15 packs. The blues are not much easier, but come out maybe one every 3-5 packs from my experience. Both of these cards are coveted at the moment because of lack of boosted cards in packs, which makes them a hot item if you pull a nice player.

For now, the Whites and Greens are pretty common, with Reds still commanding a nice premium of lower tier cards as an exchange rate. Not many packs have been opened yet, but as more inserts are released, and more packs are opened, everything but the golds and blues should drop significantly in value. Keep that in mind if you are paying premium prices.

Upcoming Releases

I can pretty much guarantee that a JJ Watt sig will hit packs today, as will a few other new inserts that will likely be associated with the beginning of the NFL season. When these cards are released, no 2015/16 card will have enough value to be traded for them. They will be the hottest thing available, and it could take 9 sigs from 2013 and 2014 to get anywhere close to trade value on the top inserts. Just be prepared to pay through the nose.

Keep an eye on which cards have a card count limit and which ones do not. If a card does not have a card count limit, the value at release will be SIGNIFICANTLY higher than days in the future. I would be shocked if they didnt release some sort of unlimited count Kickoff insert set, which is in your best interest to chase and trade. This might be a great opportunity to stock up on some extremely rare 2014 cards, which could be traded for better 2015/16 cards as they are released. Do not sit on any unlimited set if you are hurting for rare stuff from previous years. Trust me.

If you are a pay to play user, these first few days should be a time where you take the lock off your credit card, and start spending. You will be able to curtail as the game moves on, but these week 1 cards will be valuable for the entirety of the year, especially if other games are any indication. User attrition will take its course, and its possible that the cards pulled by people who leave will sit in dead accounts for eternity. This reduces card counts in an unseen fashion, and makes things even more rare than they will likely already be.

Overall, I dont think I have ever been as excited about a season as I am about this one, and I cannot wait to see what goes down before Sunday. Once gameday rolls back around, look out! This is Huddle’s time to shine, and their design team is among the best there is. They will be releasing some of the coolest cards in the history of Topps Digital, and you will not want to miss out.

2015 NFL Kickoff: Contest Primer – Steelers vs Patriots

Capture
download

If you are like me and still on cloud nine from the newly attained NFL license, here is your primer for tonight’s opening game. There are a number of cards that have still not released, so I will focus on the players you should definitely review prior to the game’s start.

NOTE: Due to likely enormous traffic, get your starting lineup in as soon as possible on the contest screen. Load your best guys and set yourself up in case things crash.

Antonio Brown – WR, Steelers

This guy is the one guy I would stock up on as much as humanly possible. He will be all over the field, and with Revis gone, the potential for points against the Pats’ secondary is huge. I would make sure that if you trade, this is the one player you have to track down. Most people will go after Roethlisberger, but receivers score more on a play by play basis due to getting more points for yardage than QBs.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Rob Gronkowski – TE, Patriots

Much like Brown on the Steelers, Gronk is the the guy to chase for New England. Gronk is on the hook for at least a TD tonight, and I wouldnt be shocked if he has a tremendous game. The Patriots will be out for blood, and Gronk will be leading the charge. Pick up as many as you can.

Scoring Potential:yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Ben Roethlisberger – QB, Steelers

I like Big Ben as a dark horse for MVP if the Steelers live up to expectations this year. He has some amazing weapons around him, and its going to be interesting how things play out. I expect at least 300 yards from him tonight, including a few TDs. Pick up what you can, as there just arent many cards around to play tonight.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Tom Brady – QB, Patriots

Lets face it, no one wants to have a better game than Tom Brady. He wants to give a big middle finger to the league, and he wants to do it on national TV. However, he didnt look great during the preseason, and he has mentioned how much the offseason has impacted him. He could easily melt down tonight, but the Steelers defense isnt what it used to be either. He always finds a way.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Julian Edelman – WR, Patriots

I think that Edelman has the tendency to take over in certain situations, but also to disappear in others. I think the Patriots running game is mediocre at best, which means teams can sit back a bit and play more to defending the pass. Edelman has had good games in the past against Pitt, but tonight could be difficult if Brady isnt himself.

Scoring Potential: yToM4rELcyToM4rELcyToM4rELc

Stay on the look out for new inserts and game boosts that could be on their way. This is going to be a fun night, dont miss out!
