Digital Card Central Celebrates One Year!

Over the last year, I have posted over 300 times, with a growing community of readers that have made this site something that I am very proud of. Since April of last year, when the site began, this site has been a place where the users of the many Topps Digital apps can come for any number of topics. It has all been in the name of giving a useful resource to the masses, and I hope you are as happy as I am to have had the experience of being a part of this site for the last year.

I built this site for a number of reasons, with the majority of them focusing on my love of writing/blogging, combined with a desire to provide tools for those who were looking for ways to get ahead in a game filled with subtle interactive points. Lets face it, these games are not easy to figure out without some help, and I wanted to make sure help was out there.

Over the year, this site has fostered some incredible relationships, both with other users and individuals that are responsible for the games themselves. Its obvious that the wonderful feedback received through these channels has been one of the biggest reasons why this site has continued to be a focus for me.

To me, the challenge that writing this site presents is worth the continuation of providing this banner for the games, and I hope that all the DCC.com fans out there will continue to trek alongside me as we navigate the changing landscape of the apps.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all the readers out there who have checked back every day, written a comment, or participated in any way. This is your site, and I could not have done it without you!

Force Tip of the Day: Ranking the Weekly Insert Sets

If you havent hopped on the fan feed in SW Card Trader as of late, there is a growing shift towards collecting the weekly inserts, mainly because many of the cards retain the most value through the weeks. They also happen to be some of the cooler looking cards in the game, and I wanted to offer my thoughts on rankings.

1. Vintage Collection

5

Checklist: 5
Lowest Count on Checklist: 1500
Highest Count on Checklist: 2000
Best Card: Han in the Millenium Falcon

For everyone that has played the other apps that Topps makes, this is the sig equivalent. The way the cards are traded, and the way the release slows down the servers diplay how much people want these cards. The Han card is about as unattainable as it gets, and its only going to get harder as we hit the hyper drive towards week 30.

2. Widevision Collection

4

Checklist: 5
Lowest Count on Checklist: 1500
Highest Count on Checklist: 3000
Best Card: Help Me Obi-wan Kenobi…

These are easily some of my favorite cards, as the horizontal presentation and cool theater like design really plays well. It captures some of the best scenes from the movies, which means it will automatically carry more value. Although the cards dont have the same collection weight as the Vintage, they are still highly tradeable.

3. Connections Collection

1

Checklist: 5
Lowest Count on Checklist: 2000
Highest Count on Checklist: 5000
Best Card: Darth Sidious / Darth Maul

When this set hit the sheet, I was so excited. I think it offers one of the more awesome themes of any of the weekly insert sets, and it also has some big names on the checklist. Additionally, the characters that are featured in the set so far are easily some of the most popular around.

4. Topps Choice

3

Checklist: 5
Lowest Count on Checklist: 2000
Highest Count on Checklist: 4500
Best Card: Jek Porkins

I am a huge fan of this design, and though the character selection is a bit outside my desired taste, the set does carry some really nice value all things considered. I think that as the set progresses, there will be a lot of reasons to continue chasing the cards, as we know that these characters may not have other cards in the game. Time to start petitioning one of the Topps team to pick your favorite guy!

5. Bounty Series

Capture

Checklist: 4
Lowest Count on Checklist: 4000
Highest Count on Checklist: 7000
Best Card: Greedo

Cool concept for an insert set, and pulling them from packs gets you an instant coin reward. You cant beat that. The look of the card is one of my favorites in the game, and I love the checklist so far. I think that this set has serious potential, and I hope it continues to go the direction it has.

6. Galactic Moments

6

Checklist: 5
Lowest Count on Checklist: 5000
Highest Count on Checklist: 7500
Best Card: Ralph McQuarrie

This design is really strong, and the things the set commemorates are awesome. However, being that they are so high in card count does not do them any favors in trade value. I do know that there are a lot of people that are collecting this set regardless, so they do have value.

7. Fan’s Choice

Capture

Checklist: 4
Lowest Count on Checklist: 15000
Highest Count on Checklist: 25000
Best Card: Darth Maul

This card is meant for everyone to get a copy of every card, which explains the high card count. These have served as insert throw ins for larger trade deals, and its unfortunate. The interface to select the card is something I havent seen in the other apps, and I would guess that there will be some really cool names that eventually get selected.

Sandlot Unwrapped: Breaking New Bunt Inserts 4/13/15

I love this part of the year in any of the apps, as it is still new and fresh. Every insert has expedited increases in value because there just arent many out there, and that rush still comes with each one you pull. Bunt has had a lot going on over the last few weeks, and here is a quick breakdown.

Signature Series: George Springer

Capture

Card Count: 400
Boost: 1x
Collectability: Extreme
Playability: Normal
Cool Factor: Home Run

I love chasing sigs. Its a second past time for me outside of playing, and with the new structure of daily contests, maybe even more so. To follow up Mike Trout with George Springer is a bit of a dropoff, but that’s only because Springer is such a new talent in the league. He has played well so far, and looks to have a bright future ahead of him. If every team is going to get a sig, Springer is a good choice for the Astros. Just not sure if I would have brought a little more popularity firepower with the second sig release. Player selection will be a hot topic in this post, and for the record, I am all for venturing off the beaten path. Lets just get established with the more popular players first. Then, when we start to get a bit tired, add some fun.

Limited Series: Pablo Sandoval

44

Card Count: 48
Boost: 1x
Collectability: Extreme+
Playability: Normal
Cool Factor: Single

The first Limited card released this year was Madison Bumgarner, who was definitely the right choice to lead off the chase. As for Kung Fu Panda, the second member of that Championship team? Not so much. I get his signing was made to be a big deal, but outside of the World Series, he hasnt been a shining star. Considering that popularity and rarity drive value among these inserts, Ill give the team a pass, but im NOT a fan of player selection for the second in the series.

Black Pack Special Release: Mike Trout Nicknames

55

Card Count: 126
Boost: 1x
Collectability: Extreme
Playability: Normal
Cool Factor: Grand Slam

I loved the nickname series design originally, and it continues to look awesome. However, the pic chosen on this card is so incredible, that it just makes it that much cooler. This card turned out to be extremely rare, and it looks like its trading quite well as a result. I dont think I have seen the black packs have its own special insert in a while, so this was cool to see.

Fresh Faces: Bartolo Colon

66

Card Count: 800
Boost: 1x
Collectability: Good
Playability: Normal
Cool Factor: Double

I really like this series, but as I have mentioned with the previous few series based cards, I am just not a fan of the player selection here. It should go without saying that not every card can be Trout or Kershaw – and SHOULDNT be Trout or Kershaw, but Bartolo Colon is a bit far down the list of players I would like to have associated with the launch of this app. The set is already trading a bit low because A-rod is the reward, but it is what it is. The design is awesome, and the card does look cool. I probably would have gone with David Ortiz or something like that just to get established before diving into the deep cuts. I know I am going to get lit up for player selection complaints, but Colon has always been a villain to me, and not because he has been a good pitcher. The value we are seeing him trade at is reflective of that status.

From the Vault – Kenny Lofton

33

Card Count: 1000
Boost: 1x
Collectability: Good
Playability: Normal
Cool Factor: Triple

I love that this series is all going to be the 1985 Topps Design if it continues this way, because the cards look amazing. Kenny Lofton was one of the top guys in the league when I was growing up, and its cool to see him get his first card. The pic is perfect as well, as Lofton running from base to base was a nightmare whenever he was able to get on board. I would have liked to see Griffey or Frank Thomas maybe before a guy like this, but I like Lofton more than someone like Colon as a deep cut. He was fun to watch, and a fan favorite, which adds a bit of a bump to his value.

Gypsy Queen Series – Set Review

77

Really great set here, no ifs ands or buts about it. The checklist was great, the design looks incredible, and the rarity plays well. I chased down a few of these cards, as I really think they are some of the better looking retro cards from the physical side of the business. Last year, this set got lost somewhere in between Ginter and the others, but this year, I feel like it is much better.

Verdict: BUY!

Career High Series – Set Review

464

Another transfer from Topps Series One in regular cards, and its a perfect set to bring over to bunt. Large checklist with a lot of top names really helps. I think that the series itself has an okay design, but it looks much better on Bunt than it does when holding the cards in hand. It kind of gets lost a bit as Gypsy Queen looks much more dynamic and cool. Some first 2015 cards for guys like Sale and Iwakuma will do well. Other than that, the cards havent traded well.

Verdict: SELL!

First Pitch Series – Set Review

787

When I saw that they had found a way to get this series over to digital without issues on the rights to the likenesses of the non-sports subjects, I was pumped. If you are not a physical card collector, this set created a ton of buzz when it was first put out, and the sets really did sell very well. I chased down a number of cards from this one, as who wouldnt want an Eddie Vedder card? How awesome is that. Considering the cards are pretty high count, they have traded well, especially the more popular musicians.

Verdict: BUY!

The Force is Strong: Discussing the Value Behind SWCT’s Biggest Cards

If you have been playing along with Star Wars Card Trader, you probably are familiar with the big three weekly sets in Vintage, Widevision and Connections. These three sets represent some of the most valuable cards in the game, and for Vintage, the sig equivalent to Bunt, Huddle and Kick. If you arent familiar with the trade economy, I want to spend a bit of time breaking down some of the bigger cards from each set.

Vintage Collection: Han in the Millenium Falcon

5

When this card came out, I remember saying to myself that this was going to be a fun set to collect. Although I wasnt enamored with the subject of the card, I knew all the first of the weekly sets would be the ones to collect. I picked up two, not understanding the firestorm that would follow. Right now, it is one of the more valuable REGULAR ISSUE cards in ANY of the four apps, let alone in Star Wars.

These cards are selling for an absolute ton on Ebay:

Vintage Han in the Millennium Falcon Auction 1

Vintage Han in the Millennium Falcon Auction 2

Vintage Han in the Millennium Falcon Auction 3

There are some reasons for it being so difficult to acquire. First, being that it is a first week card, the amount of people that pulled the card and didnt stick around is likely going to be pretty high. When you do a blind trade for the card, you will see that there are a lot of accounts that own one, but have zero trades and a low collection score.

The reason for this is simple – attrition. Although the app has become seriously popular, there are still people that downloaded the app, opened a few packs, and left. Their accounts still have the cards, as Topps never reclaims dead cards from old accounts. Because this was a 1:30 pack pull, the ease in which a dead account could have pulled one is pretty high. Similarly, Han is a very popular character in the most popular set of the game.

There is also a marathon award that you will be rewarded for collecting every card in the set, thus making it MORE valuable. As of right now, I dont know of any SINGLE card that can be traded for the Vintage Han, and there might not be one. The allure is just too high.

Widevision Collection: Help Me Obi Wan!

4

Like the Vintage Han, this was a first week issue, and is the rarest card in the set. Again at a very easy pull rate, the dead account theory still holds true. Unlike Vintage Han, this set isnt as popular as the the sig equivalent, but that is like saying that Rolls Royce is only slightly less valuable than Bentley or something like that.

The crazy thing is, I dont even think this is the coolest Widevision card in the set (Duel of the Fates anyone?), nor is Vintage Han. This card is just hard to come by, and the majority of active users who own a copy, have it on lock.

Unless you have an extra Widevision Obi, you are likely not going to be able to trade for a Vintage Han, as it is the one bargaining chip that remains on the table to be included in that deal.

Vintage Collection: Battle in Outer Space!

This is easily my favorite of the Vintage cards, and its not even a competition. As the week 3 edition of Vintage, its not as valuable as some of the others, but it is easily the coolest looking.

Here is the thing with this card, as it is a bit odd. Because of the way Vintage was released, week 3 was the first time that people REALLY saw the value in collecting those cards. As a result, the collectors out there started to hoard the set pieces, opening a ton of packs of during the release, and sitting on their copies.

Battle in outer space’s value fell considerably, mainly because there are so many people out there with 3-6 copies of it. Although it is way more popular of a subject matter, the Vintage Tarkin remains a bigger deal. This is in spite of a similar card count and a similar value to the set. Additionally, in week 3, user attrition was more stabilized, making a significantly higher portion of the print run still with relatively active accounts.

It has been this way since week 3, and the Vintage cards have become relatively interchangeable since that time.

Widevision Collection: Duel of the Fates

I love love, love, this card. Love it. Its a memorable scene from Episode 1, despite the general work being the worst of the 6. Maul is a popular character, and the music alone makes this a card to have. I wish it would play each time you looked at it, as that would really complete the whole experience. That being said, its relatively surprising how much value this card still has.

As the week 2 Widevision release, there are more in circulation than Obi wan, but it is still tradeable for some of the rarer Vintage cards regardless. Of all the weekly sets, I am a huge fan of the Widevision releases, as the horizontal approach really allows for a cool looking card. I cant wait to see what they have in store.

Vintage Collection: Jawas of Tatooine

Another favorite of mine, this is one card where things changed a bit for the Vintage collection. First, this card had longer odds than any of the other releases in the set. Instead of the normal 1:30 packs, this was 1:75 packs, making it quite difficult to hoard in the same way it was with the previous examples.

Adding in that it is 1750 copies instead of the normal 2000, makes this quite the card to chase down a few copies of. Guaranteed, there will be a VERY rare vintage collection card right before the award in week 10. Its the reason the hoarders are doing what they are doing. They need to protect themselves in case something crazy happens. If you have played the other games, it is almost a certainty that there will be a 1000 copy vintage card coming. That will be a fun day, indeed.

Bunt Tip of the Day: Choosing Your Contest Level

If you havent had the chance to go in and tool around in the contests part of Bunt, I really suggest you try it out. Not only is it fun and interesting, but it can be free as well. There are some nice prizes available, and its replacement of the weekly leaderboard is welcome. For someone like me, who doesnt have the time to sit in front of MLB.com all day to compete, this lets me do it my way.

Being that there are different contests available, with more likely on the way, there are many ways to play along. Right now, there are three daily levels, and I have gotten some questions on which ones to choose. Here is a breakdown.

All Star – 7.5k to 10k entry

Here is the thing. If you are going to pay to play in this league, you need to ensure that you have the firepower to do some damage. This means your collection should have some nice gold cards, some elite blue cards and all sorts of red, green and white cards. As the season goes on, this will change, as many people are still trying to build up their lineup.  Eventually, you may not be able to get to the money spots without quite a few gold and blue cards to play.

The prizes are lucrative for your investment, with a mystery pack of cards for the winner, and a very attractive coin bonus of almost 40k for 2-5. Finishing 6-10 gets you over 20k, so that isnt bad either. Just be prepped to play. Dont go in with a terrible collection and expect to finish high. Also, expect to watch or follow along with every game, and make switches with every play that scores in Bunt. Right now, they are splitting games by time of day, so you wont have to be in play for the whole day. It also adds a new opportunity to win close to 80k coins if you can win both contests.

Pro – 2.5k entry

This league is less lucrative than the all star league and you wont need as much to really compete as you would among the game’s best contest players in the other. Prizes are diminished as well, with less coins and a lower pack for the champions.

If you are going into this league, go in with some nice blues, a good amount of elite reds, including at least 1-2 of the day’s starting pitchers, a lot of nice green cards, and more whites to boot. You will have to pay attention to win, but to finish higher, you may not need to be on top of every switch. Because the league wont have as many top players, its possible that not everyone will have the cards to switch in at this point. Missing a few plays wont damage your potential like it would in All Star.

Rookie – Free entry

To be completely honest, Rookie is a complete wild card. Because anyone can play for free, it brings all sorts of people to the game. Top collectors can just set their lineup and forget it, and they could outduel some rookie players with 9 golds of elite players.

At the same time, you only are battling against 100 people at a time, so you could get a nice draw and not have many top players in your group. Its worth a shot to play even if you cant be around the whole time. You never know, and you could walk away with enough coins to get a free entry into the pro league.

For your lineup, play what you can, with a focus on your elite players. Pitchers will be an easier position to follow along, but its all about who you have. Before you have enough cards to play, I would suggest against buying into a league, and using your daily bonus to buy packs. After you have built up a collection – then it might be wiser to pay the entry fee.

Huddle High Five: 5 Sets I would Love To See

Since the beginning of the offseason, I think Huddle has honestly done some of the best work the app has ever seen. It may even be some of the better work ANY of the apps have ever seen. Its clear that the design team and product team for the app are at the top of their game.

Because they are in the process of working through a few new ideas, I figured it was time to throw in some of my own. Obviously they are limited by the head shots they are required to use, but this is where a great design team because more valuable than ever.

Nickname Series

Football has some of the best nicknames that exist in any sport. Beast Mode, the Gronk, All Day, its all there. I think its time to celebrate some of those nicknames by using them in a set.

1985 Topps Football

With the recent release of 1970s gamenight series, which I love, I think it opens the door for other iconic designs to be used.

Capture1

The 1985 Football design is one of my favorites, and I was excited when they used it in Bunt of all places. Time to bring it to Huddle!

High Motor Series

Think of all those guys out there who are known for never giving up on a play, regardless of the situation. Those guys that are out there that are always playing in 5th gear. This set is for them. The guys like Clay Matthews, JJ Watt and company come to mind, always being ready to play.

1957 Topps Football

Back when Johnny Unitas was a rookie, there were no action shots that showed uniform logos or helmet logos in the way that they do now.

Capture

Why not use that situation to your advantage? Its an iconic design, and its one that everyone can appreciate.

NFL Draft Series

I would love to see a card set where the top guys in previous years of the draft have releases that are numbered to the overall pick that they were drafted. I know a lot of people would love to have a 1/1 Cam Newton, or Tom Brady to 199. A lot of opportunity for some really rare cards there.

Again, I love what Huddle has done, and I think they are on a REALLY good track as of late. Its always fun to experiment, and the offseason is the perfect venue.

Bunt Tip of the Day: Which Currently Available Pitchers Are Worth the Chase?

If you havent found out by now, Pitchers make the Bunt world go round. More in terms of gameplay than inserts, but they are the eye of the storm. If you can get your hands on a top scoring card of an elite starting pitcher, you have just found yourself a gem. Hitters will likely have their day in the new contest structure, but for now, we are still playing regular contests before getting into the more wacky games later on.  If you are going to pay the king’s ransom, which pitchers are worth the haul?

Clayton Kershaw

2014 ERA: 1.77
2014 WHIP: 0.857
2014 K: 239

There was no better pitcher in baseball last year than Kershaw, and everyone in Bunt knew it. Minuscule ERA and WHIP made him a points monster on their own, but with the 239 K to boot? Good luck finding a way to match that. This year should be another big year for him, even though his opening day start wasnt his usual performance. Dont let that scare you. He is the best there is.

Felix Hernandez

2014 ERA: 2.14
2014 WHIP: 0.915
2014 K: 248

Like Kershaw, King Felix had a banner year. He would have had an even better year had he not lost some of the juice down the stretch with a few bad starts, but I digress. The reason I am talking about him before the reigning Cy Young, has more to do with consistency over the years than anything. Felix has been one of the top if not THE top AL pitchers for years. He should have no problem replicating the success again.

Corey Kluber

2014 ERA: 2.44
2014 WHIP: 1.095
2014 K: 269

Although he doesnt have the ERA and WHIP to match the other big guns, his K numbers actually make up for it and then some. Because strikeouts have such a large point bump in Bunt, they are almost an unfair advantage to pitchers who strike out a ton of people but also give up some hits. Kluber has shown that he can run with the top guys in the league over the last two years, but he has yet to really reach Elite status like we are seeing among consistent years from guys like Kershaw.

Madison Bumgarner

2014 ERA: 2.98
2014 WHIP: 1.090
2014 K: 219

Putting up one of the best pitching performances in World Series history will get you brownie points with Bunt collectors, and his numbers show that he is capable of being a card worth having in your deck with every single start he has – regardless of team. He pitched a gem last night, but he does have his meltdowns, so watch out. I think he is in line for another great year, but the Giants having lost a few pieces may mean the numbers come up a bit. Not enough to make that much of a difference though.

Adam Wainwright

2014 ERA: 2.38
2014 WHIP: 1.031
2014 K: 179

Its worth nothing that he is the only pitcher on this list without 200 K to his name, but he is still a guy to chase because he doesnt give up many runs and his WHIP is quite close to 1.0. Those are the keys to success in Bunt, and the 170+ strikeouts still put him among the top 10% of the league. His abdominal strain didnt seem to hurt him much in his great start versus the Cubbies, but it may come back to haunt him as the season drags on.

Jordan Zimmermann

2014 ERA: 2.66
2014 WHIP: 1.072
2014 K: 182

Not only did he have a great year in 2014, but he added a no hitter and a lot of attention to his skills as well. With another year under his belt, I could see Zimmermann being an ace to watch for 2015, especially if the Nationals are as good as people think they are. Like Bumgarner, he can be prone to a meltdown, so keep an eye on his start. If he is on, he will be one of the best.

Julio Teheran

2014 ERA: 2.89
2014 WHIP: 1.081
2014 K: 186

I like Teheran to be one of the better pitchers in the NL this year, as his numbers suggest a growing maturity on the mound. More efficiency, higher Ks, and a lot more movement on his pitches show that he is someone that is getting better with every passing game. He may not be the man right now, but he will be a great anchor to pick up if you have the chance.

Let me stress that the first 2-3 starts of the year will likely not be representative of a pitcher’s true potential. With growing concerns over pitcher durability, teams have their guys on tight leashes, and dont let them loose until they know everyone is ready to go. Dont let a bad first start scare you, and I would even suggest taking advantage of people that want to dump a guy who starts the year poorly. You will see how well that can pay off.

Bunt Tip of the Day: Building Decks for Contests

The contest structure is new for 2015, and as we got a preview of last night, its definitely a bit different than it used to be. I am actually a huge fan of this new structure, and I cant wait to see all the crazy fun things that Topps can come up with on a day to day basis.

All that being said, there is a new strategy element for the decks used to fund your lineups in the game, and as mentioned before, it will change as the individual contest rules change. This is where deck building has all of a sudden become a valuable skill in Bunt.

Your Deck

In case you are unfamiliar, here is how it works. For each contest league, you will select cards to use in the course of that specific requirement. You will have to choose between any cards that arent being used for another league, and those cards may be automatically limited by the contest’s rules.

By going to the little flag at the bottom of the screen, you can select which deck you want to edit, and start building for the week, day or game. As an example, for Opening Day, you can choose any card you have as long as your total boost does not exceed 175x for the whole team. This means at most, you can play 175 of your common white cards. Other contests may be different.

Topps has added an auto build feature, but it may not be the best way to build your deck if you have tons of cards to use. If you only have a few, that is the way to go. It will select your top available boosts first and filter down to your lesser boosts. From what I can tell, it may value heat index and other elements in which cards it chooses, but we all know that position is almost more important than anything.

Who Should You Play?

Right now, there are two types of players to consider for your deck, pitchers and hitters. Position outside of that designation doesnt matter, as you will likely not worry about playing a 1B over a 3B, just that both are hitters.

If you are someone planning on sitting in front of MLB Extra Innings all day, having a good mix of top guys is really important. Because stats depend on API from MLB, there is a delay between live TV and the Bunt scoring to populate. It provides a switch out opportunity if you see a home run or strikeout live, and gives you the time to make the switch in game. If you have hitters in your deck, you will be able to get A TON of points for the big plays.

If you are not planning on streaming games, then I would definitely lead to play more pitchers in your deck. Pitchers will have more opportunities to score than the hitters do in most cases, and the negative points are less likely to accumulate in big ways. You will only have to switch every half inning instead of changing out your entire lineup with every at bat.

The best thing to do is reference the day’s probable starting pitchers and pick those out of your collection to start. After those are done, pick up some of the closers from the favored teams, and some of the big bopper hitters that you have available. You never know when Giancarlo Stanton is going to come up with nobody out and the bases loaded.

What to Look for In Contest Rules

Based on my limited interaction with the contest part of the app, I can make an educated guess as to what will be the main elements they will toy with.

Boost Max Level – I would look at this pretty closely, as there could be leagues with very tiny max levels or ones that have infinite levels. 175 looks to be middle of the road for the beginning of the season when everyone’s collection is tiny, but it could end up getting much larger.

Plays – Last year, each switch to your lineup cost one play, and those plays regenerated at a specific rate. You were only granted so many at a time, and for right now they are unlimited. This could change contest by contest, and its a good thing to take a look at. Check out the number of plays and regeneration time before building your deck.

Player Types – I can see them doing a hitters only league, or a pitchers only league, as its one of the things that makes the contest fun. Keep an eye on this for the future, as right now, there are no limitations.

Teams – I expect at least one contest per week that focuses on a specific game or teams.

Max Card Boost Level – I can see them using a league structure where every card must be a certain boost level.

Strategy

Look at all the contests you plan to play in and find a way to create a playable deck for each one. Because you can only use a card in one league at a time, you may need to figure out which of the leagues fit best for the better cards in your collection. That 4x Mike Trout game boost only gets you so far in a league that is better fitted for pitchers.

Leagues with low plays favor pitchers. Leagues with shorter timeframes favor hitters, in that if you only have to watch one game, its easier than watching a full slate at once.

Trading

A word to the wise – if a league favors a certain type of card, the trade value will skyrocket temporarily. Like we saw with Opening Night, everyone knew that Cubs and Cardinals were the only playable option, so the chase was on. Dont overspend, for these cards as it could handicap you for future leagues. Because this is no longer a week by week play (for now), you need to stay balanced. Dont give up the house for a card that could only help you for one day. Think bigger picture.

The main point here is to have fun and play the fantasy element of the game much more like you would in your normal leagues. This was one of the main reasons I was so drawn to Bunt, and I am glad that it is now a huge part of the game.

Force Tip of the Day – Value of Base Parallel Inserts vs Regular Inserts

Over the last few weeks, Star Wars Card Trader has been one of the most enjoyable experiences for a number of different reasons. Being that it is a game based 100% on collecting, I think it creates a lively economy that hinges on many factors for value. I have noticed that there is a distinct value difference sometimes between Base Parallel Inserts and Regular Inserts, and I wanted to offer my thoughts.

Definition

A base parallel insert (BPI), refers to an insert that is created by adding a new color to the normal spectrum available in the base structure. Instead of White, Blue, Red, Yellow or Gold, the insert is Green, Purple or Orange.

2Capture

A regular insert is a card that doesnt share the normal base design, such as Vintage or Widevision, etc. These inserts can potentially be further split into pack pulled inserts vs award inserts for completing sets, but that’s a different discussion.

Value Discrepancy

From what it looks like, the regular insert group is more valuable for a variety of reasons, usually stemming from reward status. For instance, if I collect all 30 of the Vintage cards, I get a reward card for the marathon. If I collect all of the Purples, at the moment I get nothing. That is a prime motivator in determining elongated value among the inserts, especially if the marathon set is one that everyone wants.

That being said, rarity is usually on the side of the BPI cards, as Greens, Orange and Purples are usually significantly more rare than the regular insert sets. At the same time, like with every card, it all depends on who you are trading with, and who is the character on the card.

Most importantly, the new hotness will always be more valuable than the older cards, with a few exceptions. If you have a brand new Orange card that only a small group of people have pulled, its going to be more valuable to those master set collectors who want one of everything. After 300 copies have been pulled, maybe not as much.

Lack of Gameplay

This is where the carry over from the other apps may have an effect, as BPI cards have been less valuable in every game unless they offer a gameplay advantage. In Topps Bunt and Topps Huddle, the BPI cards usually had larger point scoring ability, thus making them more valuable than they normally would be. In SWCT, there is no gameplay, so it becomes a different tale.

Overall

Bottom line, if you like the BPI cards (which I definitely do), chase them to your hearts content. I have amassed quite a collection for very little, and its all because people have viewed the greens and the like as inferior to the other group. Its easy to pull a 7000 count Elite Soldier, but I am happy to give that up for a Green Vader. Do what you like and this game will continue to be awesome. You dont have to follow the trends at every turn.

Opening Night Contest Primer – Breaking Down Cubs vs Cardinals

Like I did for Topps Huddle, I want to give everyone a good idea of what players are worth your time to put in your deck, and which ones might be left behind for a reason. There are some guys that could easily make or break your deck, so your choices need to be spot on to win. Here is a breakdown.

SP – Adam Wainwright, Cardinals

wain

Out with an abdominal strain for most of the spring, Waino finally got some work in over the last few weeks. He should be ready, but its hard to expect he is going to be at 100%. With the Cubs lineup improved thanks to some new faces, plus some of the younger guys coming back for another year in the bigs, this is going to be a test. Regardless, Waino is a SOLID play, and you should have all his cards ready as much as possible.

Verdict: VITAL PIECE

1B – Anthony Rizzo, Cardinals

Capture

As a game boost, there will be a lot of people that will be counting on Rizzo to have a great game. Lucky for us, he has a career .333 average vs him, and that should play well. I would expect that we will likely get a hit or two from Rizzo tonight, although he is definitely a strkeout risk as well. Of all the guys for the cubs in the game, Rizzo is likely the best play.

Verdict: VITAL PIECE

C – Yadier Molina, Cardinals

Mo

Emerging as one of the top catchers over the last few years, Molina is a key piece to the Cardinals being as consistent as they have been. He had a bit of a down 2014, putting up stats that most teams would kill for in that position anyways. Yadi never strikes out, and that is a big deal in Bunt. This is about as safe a play as there is, but the reward may not be huge with power numbers lower than the other game boost in Rizzo.

Verdict: WORTH PICKING UP

SS – Starlin Castro, Cubs

Over the last few years, Castro has been up and down, but has been a solid infielder for the Cubs. He has some complimentary hitting numbers hitting over .275 and having relatively low K/AB numbers. I would say that because there are so few cards in circulation right now, Castro is worth the play.

Verdict: WORTH PICKING UP

SS Jhonny Peralta, Cardinals

Its interesting, because Peralta is one of those guys that just finds a way to stay relevant no matter the situation. He had a good spring, batting over 300, and knocking in a few runs. For lack of other options, he might be worth a spot play here and there, especially with runners on base.

Verdict: LOW PRIORITY

1B – Mark Reynolds, Cardinals

Over the spring, he struck out a lot, and hit well below the Mendoza line. I know he is available, and he has cards, but that does not make him worth a play unless its bases loaded and none out. Just be careful.

Verdict: LOW PRIORITY

OF – Jorge Soler, Cubs

As part of the barrage of top prospects in the Cubs system right now, Soler is primed for a ROY run. This spring was a good one for him, and I expect that he will play well tonight. I would definitely pick up a few of his cards if you can, as he is a guy that can hit for power and average.

Verdict: WORTH PICKING UP

Tonight is the big night, ladies and gents! Its time to play some baseball, and for the next six months, Bunt is going to be rocking. Lets play two, right?
