Huddle Tip – Non Scoring Cards and Value During the Playoffs

Right now, things are all sorts of crazy as people ramp up for the biggest game of the year. That means that all Seahawks and Patriots are suddenly 500 times more valuable than any other card in the game. However, a word of warning should still be offered, as there is no reason to cannibalize your collection in the name of points if you dont want to.

We all know that it is very likely that 2014 cards will not score next year. You just cant have people walking into a season with a collection full of 15x boosts. It would literally remove any and all new players immediately, and that cant happen. It also would hurt sales in the initial part of the year, so that’s not going to happen either. Bottom line, these next two weeks will be the only remaining time that boosts matter.

There is still a very collectible nature to all the playoff cards, especially the sigs, as they should spike in value back to normal means once the game is over. When no boosts matter any more, every card reverts back to its collection value.

With the recent release of the die cut pro-bowl cards, we can see that there will continue to be a focus on providing high coin reward to incite people to keep buying packs. Im all for it, especially if the sets will eventually be more easy to come by later on. Collections are built, not made, and it seems like there are a lot of people who are forgetting that in the name of the last scoring opportunity of the year.

I have said numerous times that once the next season of Huddle starts, the previous year’s cards will lose most, if not all of their value. There is one saving grace of that situation, as rarity is still a big deal to many users out there. If you were around at the beginning of the season, you saw what happened. All those readily available inserts became interchangeable, and new cards were playing at a premium. There were still some very rare sigs and inserts that remained on lockdown, however.

When Bunt 2015 launches in a few months, pay CLOSE attention to what happens. For the first time, the new cards and their design will likely match the look and feel from the previous year, which could help maintain value overall. If the cards all look relatively similar, it wont matter as much if they cant score for collectors out there. For points players it will be a different story, but that’s for a different article.

Here is my advice.  Come February 2nd, there will be a rude awakening for a lot of players who wish they hadnt done what most are doing right now. Although there will be residual value for cards that are still rare, most will not be as valuable as they once were. If you have any inkling of a collector mentality in your approach, save your nice cards. Use your coins to stock up on playoff cards you need, but dont trade your nice sigs for points cards just because they are boosted 15x.

On the other hand, if you are not a collector, the advice changes a bit. Remind yourself that there is a LOOONNNNG offseason approaching fast, and I would hate to see people dump the game because of it. Hopefully some will start to adopt enough of a collection based approach that it wont be so big of a drop off when the big game is done.

Huddle Tip of the Day: Pre-Super Bowl Tasks For Each Type of Player

The next few weeks are actually pretty important, despite leading up to only one game. It just so happens that this game is the final scoring opportunity of the year, and the coin purse can be about as rich as its going to get. Never has one game been so important – even if you are not the final two people left in the Huddle Bowl playoffs.

I also realize not everyone is living for the moment, so lets dive a bit deeper into some of the to-do lists for each style of player.

Points Players

Pack to Open: Playoff Pack
When to Open: After any playoff release
Top cards to chase: Conference Championship 12x

If you are a person who is within the top 100 of the leaderboard, this next two weeks will be more impactful to your overall potential than you would think. You will have to fight the crowd for the Seahawks and Patriots cards that everyone is chasing, and its going to be a fight. Remember, unless you are within the top 25, you wont need to get every one of the 15x boosts to compete. Shoot for the 8x Playoff Series cards which are becoming more and more plentiful by the day.

With everyone trying to chase down the main points cards, you can actually make up a lot of ground by trading high scoring Conference Championship Cards for other cards which have high boosts but are not part of that set. Having a ton of 8x-10x cards in trade for a 12x Lynch or Brady isnt a bad thing at all.

I would also highly suggest trying to complete the 3 sets (Base, Conf Championship, POTG) if you have the means to do so. By getting both the complete playoff series set and conference championship set, you will earn 4 million coins, and if the award is delivered before the game, you will have a huge opportunity to buy packs before the game to stock up on everything you traded away to complete the set in the first place. Even if the set award is delivered after the game (which I dont think will be the case), its worth the risk.

Here are my targets in order of my prediction on play in the Super Bowl:

  1. Marshawn Lynch
  2. Rob Gronkowski
  3. Tom Brady
  4. Julian Edelman
  5. Russell Wilson
  6. Doug Baldwin

.
.
.
.
100. Legarrette Blount

Seriously, Bill Belichick is not the kind of coach that will ride the hot hand, especially when he knows the Seattle rush defense is as stout as it is. Brady will shoulder most if not all of the burden, especially with Sherman and Thomas banged up on the other end. There is no reason to hand the ball to a guy that will likely average 1.2 yards per carry. Dont be swayed by Blount’s performance in the NFC title game.

Lastly, we saw that the game boosts are steadily increasing with each round. That means that your 12x Conference Championship boost may be dwarfed by the time the Super Bowl rolls around. Keep that in mind as you trade, as guys on my list above may get the GO Boost treatment, and that could impact your collection. If you traded away all your good cards for players that will be GO Boosts, you are not going to have the same success.  It will leave you with cards everyone has, and none that fewer people are without. Just be careful.

Collectors

Pack to Open: Signature Packs and Playoff Packs
When to Open: After any playoff release
Top cards to chase: Playoff Sigs and Boost Sigs

Is there any doubt that the playoff sig sets are anything but some of the coolest cards of the year? I think that Huddle has made them collectable for both points players and collectors alike, and as a sig collector, its like the golden age right now.

That being said, its not a bad idea to buy playoff packs either, and for good reason. As mentioned above, the sets pay out a ton of coins, which will come in handy in opening up some of the post Super-Bowl packs for Champions cards, award winners and stuff like that. Might as well get some extra funds while you can.

If you open playoff packs and are not a points player, the playoff cards are coveted for their boosts, so you can trade the better ones for some really nice cards. As a collector, that leverage rarely exists this way in Huddle, so take advantage while you can. There are so many active inserts in the playoff packs where card counts dont matter, so you wont have to worry about not pulling anything for your coins. I have seen sigs get tossed around while people get going on their lineups for the game, which means they are literally doing the work for you. They spend the coins on the packs with TOUGH odds, and you pull cards that are easy odds and trade for the big sigs. Boom.

Let me reinforce that the ease in which I just explained the strategy is not the ease in which it will be executed. You will have to work on the feed to find the right people to trade with, they will NOT be knocking down your door. However, there are likely a ton of collector based things on the radar, and you want to be prepped.

Free to Play Players

Pack to Open: Playoff Packs
When to Open: After any playoff release
Top cards to chase: Any Seahawks and Patriots Players

This time of year is not friendly to the F2P community, as there are a ton of cards, but are all very expensive to obtain. If you are a collector and not a points player, I am trading every live card for collection pieces or taking these few weeks off. There is no reason to torture yourself like this. That being said, once the Super Bowl is over, you will be able to get nice cards for a fraction of the value they are right now, so patience will prove valuable.

For the F2P Points players, dont get caught up in the sigs and other high odds releases. Time your pack opening to right after new cards hit, and start opening NOTHING but playoff packs. Even if you are opening 1 per week with the coins from daily bonuses, or coin cards, its still worth your time. There are over 50 inserts live in that pack, and if you time it just right, the pack should be hot.

Now, if you pull a top card, its not in your best interest to have a tent pole. Trade it for as many big playoff boosts as you can. Diversification will help you MUCH more in the points chase than having one card that scores a ton. Stay away from tempting releases of other sigs and stuff like that, as it is NOT going to be worth your coins. Follow some of the advice I mentioned above if it is that important to you to get the bigger cards.

To finish in the top 100 will net you many more coins than you got previously, so its in your best interest to make the jump to a points player. You can easily make top 100 with a few nice boosts for the best players. Many of the top points players are well past the 4x blues or even the 5x other cards. They should be willing to give them up if you can offer some playoff cards they have. Again, diversification is key, trust me. Dont just focus on Russell Wilson or Tom Brady either, as we saw that no one player is devoid of the potential to choke.

NOTE: I have been in the top 10 each week for the last 5 weeks, and I still play gold cards. Just an FYI, Golds are still playable.

As mentioned before, this is one crazy time for Huddle. More players will be watching and playing along than ever, and it is a chase unlike any other. Be prepared to play to your strengths in each type of player you are, and you will come out fine. Let me know if you have any questions, and I will do my best to help.

Gridiron Unwrapped – Conference Championship VIP Reward Card Edition

With the season wrapping up, there are a lot of new cards flying around to capitalize on the last part of the playable game year. After yesterday there is only one game left, and Huddle is working overtime to help players get one last taste of the action. They are doing it in style none-the-less.

With Holiday VIP program taking hold, there was extra reason to spend the money to get each status, as two cards per level were distributed instead of just one. The Gold had two valor cards, one being a sig, Black had 2 Camo cards including one sig. As for the Diamonds, they got their own taste of awesomeness with 1/1 sigs and the normal Diamond 1/1. Here is a breakdown of the readily available cards.

Gold VIP – Earl Thomas Valor Series

Capture

Count: 369
Cool Factor: Leonidas Battle Ready
Play Value: MEDIUM
Boost: 10x

I love the Valor cards, as the design transfers from physical football cards better than any of the other series we have seen. Its crazy to think that Thomas has gone this long without cards, but with this batch, we see he is finally getting the attention he deserves. This is a great addition to the series, as the Legion of Boom is Valor material every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Gold VIP – Eddie Lacy Valor Sig

Capture

Count: 369
Cool Factor: Tonight We Dine in Hell!
Play Value: HIGH
Boost: 10x

I dont think anyone expected Lacy to have the level of success he did against the daunting Seahawks rush defense. He put up some numbers none-the-less, and this card made that very easy to capitalize on. As I said with Thomas, the Valor series looks good, but adding a Lacy sig is just the icing on the cake. It works so well, and I think the design team really liked having a card that looked good without much work. My only objection is how many of his sigs have been released over the last few weeks, as this will be number 3 with the playoff sig, sig reward (weeks 11-17), and the Valor. I would have liked Legarrette Blount to maybe get a shot.

Black VIP – Aaron Rodgers Black Camo Boost

Capture2

Count: 69
Cool Factor: Blackhawk Helicopter
Play Value: EXTREME
Boost: 15x

This is a big card. A very big card. To have it for the game yesterday was really nice, even though Rodgers struggled to maintain his production from previous weeks. Even as a collection piece it still holds up long term because of Rodgers’ popularity, which makes it less of a bummer that the Packers couldnt get it done. It IS a bit confusing that this card looks so similar to the other camo boosts, but I dont think anyone really is complaining. When you view both Rodgers camo side by side, you can see the black tint applied. Too bad only one of these cards will be available for the Big Game, but it is what it is.

Black VIP – Russell Wilson Red Camo Boost Sig

Capture

Count: 69
Cool Factor: F18 Raptor Jet
Play Value: ????
Boost: 15x

With the way Wilson played yesterday, he deserves a -15x boost, as it was seriously one of the worst first halves I have ever seen played by a QB in a championship game. Somehow, the Seahawks pulled it out by the skin of their teeth, and Wilson seemed to get back to his old self. This card is going to be a beast come Super Bowl, but we just dont know which Wilson is going to show up. The red camo looks like Fire, which is beyond awesome, and to make it a sig puts this among the cooler cards in the game.

NOTE: I find it amazing how much value has shifted on these boost sigs. Last year’s boost sigs couldnt be given away. This year’s boost sigs are coveted. A testament to the cool factor of these cards.

VIP Signature Series – Earl Thomas

Capture

Count: 30
Cool Factor: Mont Blanc
Play Value: MEDIUM
Boost: 15x

Like I said, its crazy that Earl Thomas had so few cards leading up to this one. That being said, this is really cool to see him get the signature treatment. I would have liked to see another big offensive name instead, but that’s the points player in me. The collector in me is perfectly fine with this selection, as there are a lot of Seattle fans that would love to have this one at such a rare clip. Considering that sigs are more about the collection, Im all about this.

VIP Conference Championship Edition – Bobby Wagner

Capture

Count: 462
Cool Factor: Trophy Case Material
Play Value: MEDIUM
Boost: 15x

Its a crime that Bobby Wagner had to wait this long to get a card in Huddle, because he is one of the main reasons that the Seahawks made it as far as they did. Using the conference championship design for a special VIP card was a great idea, and with odds at 1:10 packs for Black VIP, this card was worth pulling pack after pack for. I think that Wagner is going to be featured much more often now that this card is available, which makes this release that much more important.

Gridiron Unwrapped – Boost Reward Card Edition!

I remember back when Huddle released the Calvin Johnson Black Boost and Teal boost. We were all in awe of what it looked like and how big the point value could potentially be. Now that we have completed the boost chase for Sage, Yellow, Mint and Chocolate, its really interesting to look back and see how far we have come.

Today, at the conclusion of those chases, we saw that Huddle really did save the best for last. Not only were there some major cards awarded to the few lucky users that completed the chase, but the cards are easily some of the most powerful ever created in any part of any of the three apps. That’s impressive.

They all look quite incredible, and its clear that anyone who was lucky enough to track down every one is going to be very happy with how they turned out. Man, I wish I had the means to get one, even if the players end up eliminated after tomorrow. The cards are just that cool.

Marshawn Lynch – Sage Award Green Fire Boost Signature

IMG_0434

Count: 19
Boost: 17x
Cool Factor: Insane

Fire boosts were already my favorite cards in the game. They are so freaking boss looking with the way that they are done, and this one takes the cake. To see that this set paid out a player that is as valuable as Lynch is, well that’s why you do these chases! This card could end up being the star of the show come Super Bowl time, as the Seahawks are easily favored to beat the Packers. I dont have words for how cool this is. My only complaint is that Huddle continues to use the messiest Lynch signature copy I have ever seen, instead of the cleaner one used for the Holiday Parallax Sig, and other sig released to start the year. Full circle on that, right?

Rob Gronkowski – Yellow Award Gold Fire Boost Signature

IMG_0433

Count: 6
Boost: 20x
Cool Factor: Insane

Its hard not to love Gronk. Not only is he a cartoon character in his persona, but he looks like one too. This card is about as cool as it gets, as Fire makes everything better. Like Lynch, the Pats are favored to advance, which means that a 20x Gronk card could be one of the most valuable tools as Huddle closes out the season. Gronk’s sig helps the visual appeal of this card, as he has a stylish way of signing his long name. I always loved cool looking autographs, one of the main reasons I collect sig cards the way I do. Wow.

Tom Brady – Diamond Mint Award Boost Signature

IMG_0432

Count: 1
Boost: 15x
Cool Factor: Indescribable

Tripmode was the only person who completed the Mint chase, which should come as no surprise. Being that he was the only one, this Brady turned into a 1/1, which makes it that much more cool. I really like the way this card was done, using the diamond pattern on the border, and the foil type background on the card. It just pops. Considering some of the mints are as low as 1 or 2, he deserves his prize.

Russell Wilson – Gold Chocolate Award Boost Signature

IMG_0431

Count: 1
Boost: 15x
Cool Factor: Undecided

Im not a fan of the Chocolate boosts. Im just not. I think that they occupy a very similar place in the collecting economy as the mint, and really didnt add much to the overall chase. This is also the only card that doesnt seem to work out as well with a Brown sig on a Brown Background, with a clashing gold background. I dont know, maybe its just my own jealousy, as I would not scoff at a 1/1 Russell Wilson boost sig with a 15x attached. That makes this card cool. Visually, its the one Im not sure how to feel about. Tripmode wins again, and like the mint, he deserves it.

========

I never thought I would say that I am sad that these boost chases are over, as they really did a lot to make the game fun this year. Even if you were only able to afford buying a few boost packs here and there all year, the gameplay was more fun regardless. Next year’s Huddle still hasnt even become a twinkle in the eye of the app producers, but I hope that some element of this is brought back.

Huddle Tip: Impact of Playoff Clarifications Article

When I saw the playoff FAQ and clarifications article hit the feed, I was immediately intrigued by the answers we were going to receive from the team. If you had been in the articles this week, questions were prominently featured in user discussion. With Huddle being so good at being abundantly clear with every release, it was odd to have so many questions among the users for once.

First off, its great to see that the recognized that users had questions and took the time to clarify everything. Every point they made in the text was just as important as the next, especially when it came to the 36 Playoff Series Cards and the new Playoff Series Conference Championship cards. To see that they have separate rewards for both sets is like an elephant taken off the collective chest of the individuals who completed the original chase.

Secondly, I think it bears a good sign for the playoffs that there will be so many chases that will all have their own type of reward. Not only does it add an element of collection to a game that is all about the boosts, but the coin rewards are ginormous. Bottom line, if you spend the time to chase, you will get your worth in return.

The separation of the awards for the playoff series also adds significant value to the conference championship cards, as more people will be happy to start that set knowing they wont have to backtrack and get the previous 36 releases.

I am a fan when the team steps up and takes ownership of this aspect of the game. Although they have been relatively absent in face time, they do want to make sure everyone understands clearly what is going down. That is a very good thing.

Playoff Tips: What to do About the New Conference Championship Series?

Lets all be honest here, no one really expected that it was going to be just 36 cards that were going to be responsible for a set that ran from the beginning of the playoffs right? Although I was kind of hoping that was the case so I could have an easy Million coins, I had already started to prep myself otherwise. With the late release of Conference Championship cards, we now know what the future looks like a bit more clearly.

The Cards

I like that there is a change with the lightning for the background to signify a new level of boost and series.

Capture

Although a new chase for the conference championship cards will be created for the top guys on each team, we should appreciate that the cards continue to look really nice. They easily could have just continued to churn out playoff series cards with no adjustment, which wouldnt have been as special, and I am happy they are putting in that extra effort. It makes things more appealing, and more of a quest.

The Boost

Making these cards 12x is a good thing to increase value if you are able to pull one. Being that they are in the same pack with 36 other active cards makes this less of an empty pack, and the 8x for the 4 active teams is still big enough to matter. 12x for these cards isnt going to kill anyone’s prospects of finishing in the place they did prior, but it might help the lower tier of points players get some firepower in trading them away.

The Checklist

Its clear that we are getting some new faces in this set, minus Andrew Luck and TY Hilton for a Colts team that is relatively faceless. I would guess that we will have some repeats, but also a chance for players like Boom Herron to get his shot as well. We need those.

The Future

Now we can expect some very interesting things in regards to the sets coming up. First, we know that the teams still playing will have their own cards for this. We can also expect that Super Bowl cards will be available for the players that make it to the big game. This ALL happened last year for the Broncos and Seahawks as well. I would guess that we will be getting some sort of Pro Bowl cards, combined with a few other chases, which will be REALLY cool to see how they turn out. Based on what I have seen for each of the sets so far released during the playoffs, we will NOT be disappointed.

Strategy

Its not in your best interest to open packs right now unless you have money and coins to burn. Not only are people still in the hangover phase from the last round of the playoffs, but activity is lower as well. Without activities in the packs, its harder to pull the nicer cards. You want to get in on the feeding frenzy. Also, the Colts are arguably the least valuable team left alive, save Luck, and that means its good to wait for Pats and Seahawks before diving in. The cards WONT sell out, so you wont miss out if you wait. If you are like me and just want to have fun ripping packs, its on baby! The best time to open packs is right after any new cards are released, so wait for that and start ripping.

Huddle Playoffs Year over Year: How Far We Have Come in 12 Short Months

I work in Sales and Marketing in my real life, and there is one thing we are always judged by. Each time we come out with a new marketing campaign, or sales initiative, we are always asked one really simple question that can either make us rock stars or look like idiots. “How much better will this be than last year?”

Since the last time the NFL Playoffs rolled around, we have come so far in Huddle that it doesnt even look like Huddle anymore. Things are better looking, better functioning, and more competitive. If you cant see that for yourself, you likely werent A) paying attention or B) around last year.

Lets walk through some of the releases last year and how they compare to this year.

Playoff Base Set

BAAW

I cant even begin to describe the differences here, especially in the look and feel of the card. Although I am not saying I hated the design last year, its like loving your first car that you got and how you feel about your brand new BMW you bought when you grew up. Although there are limitations in place for 2014, it still looks about as boss as it can possibly be.

Playoff Sigs

sig

Last year’s playoff sig was something at the time, as it was the first to really use a design that didnt fit in with the normal look of a huddle card. Nothing like this year, where the sig design is amazing all on its own, tweaked for the playoffs to look awesome. The addition of variant editions makes it even better.

Playoff Inserts

MVP

The MVP set has an advantage over this year with the use of action shots, but think of what could have been done with this year’s design if they had that same opportunity. Obviously there will be other playoff sets released this year, but the Champion’s collection is one that should be heralded for its cool concept and wonderful design.

Playoff Big Boosts

bIG BOOST

Although Mystery cards ended up being Manning and Lynch for the Super Bowl at 5x, we havent seen the programs yet for the 2014 Super Bowl. Im guessing something big is coming, as its clear that a progression of playoff cards is in place. Last year’s version did have the opportunity to use action shots, but the cool boost designs this year make up for it. I used the Fire because it is easily my favorite of all the different boosts. The Changeling Boost also has a sweet design, but no player yet, so I went with Brady.

Other Playoff Cards

Capture

I think it goes without saying that Huddle broke out the big guns for the playoffs, and I could not be happier at the way this worked out. Each card is cooler than the next, and it should be very apparent that the team turned Head Shot lemons into Huddle “hard lemonade.” They easily could have resigned themselves to a fate that is thrust upon them by licensing situations, and yet, here we are. I give them all the credit in the world because they really did an awesome job. Complain all you want about “This player doesnt score anymore!”, but its worth your time to open your eyes and see the fun that they have been able to manage.

You are missing out if you dont.

2015 Topps Bunt: Updates and Ideas That Should to Be Considered

With Bunt slowly trucking along as we get to the eventually beginning of the 2015 season, I think that there are a lot of reasons why everyone should be VERY excited for the new build of the app. That being said, I still think there are a lot of reasons why things still need some major attention prior to that launch. Here are some of my top items, and I encourage you to do the same.

User Interaction

As a whole, there are a lot of issues that stem from interactions with other users. This includes Topps to the Fans, Fans to Topps, and Fans to other fans. Although I dont think that new messaging systems or any of that would be anything but cosmetic, its interesting to think how that might improve the gameplay experience. I also think that there are a lot of reasons why new structures to article comments and other things would be easier to follow, instead of having to piece back through the threads on your own. Something as simple as a search box might solve some of that, especially on the articles where things get busy.

In terms of Topps to the Fans, social media has served an enormous purpose to help spread the awareness of the game itself, as well as the promotion of its programs. There needs to be major attention placed on using Twitter and other means to communicate with fans who raise issues, have questions, or just want to talk to someone about the game they love. I have suggested a creation of a Topps Digital Support handle, that will function concurrently with the zendesk form, but that is still up in the air. Its just more important to show people they are not being ignored, even if the request is personal rather than universal. At the same time, I understand there are some losers out there that will try to game the system, but those growing pains will dissipate when they discover how much oversight the team has on their accounts.

VIP System

The idea of the VIP system is a GREAT one, and TOPPSIAN deserves a ton of credit for running it basically by himself.  However, at the same time it remains one of the biggest question marks in the game, only further exacerbated by people’s lack of understanding surrounding qualifications.

For those of us who understand, we know its hard to publish static targets for how much is needed to reach each level, and publishing those numbers may actually put some users in a bad spot with the whole app knowing how much they spend monthly. I get it, there are a lot of people who will say “How am I supposed to compete with a guy that spends $XXXX dollars per month?” Similarly, it might be tough to predict spending targets a month in advance, knowing that things change on a dime. All worth consideration for why the VIP targets arent published.

That being said, there may be more users that might be willing to buy more knowing that the next level of VIP is just a few purchases away. Its a double edged sword, but transparency is always better than being in the dark from a customer perspective. There are cons to being in the know, but its better to make them known.

Competition – Daily and Weekly

I mentioned back in April that single day leagues would be awesome. Both Bunt and Huddle have found a way to make that a regular thing now. Its great for people who might not want to spend the entire week in front of a TV or mobile device following along.

The main focus of competition is that the people who buy into the game can amass a significant advantage against those that are free to play. Although I support that advantage fully, there needs to be more universal competition. This means the people that spend should maintain their paid advantage, but the free users should also get an opportunity to play in a spectrum that is competitive for them too. Im not sure how that happens, but I am open to ideas. One idea I had prior was to organize people by season points, so that the top people play against the top people, so on and so forth. That gets complicated and hard to manage, which is an issue in itself.

Another form of competition would be user vs user that I would love to see, where a user would be able to wager coins or cards to be paid to the person who wins. It could be a week long thing or a day long thing, but both would be so freaking awesome.

Lastly, the ability to create league based point chases would be cool too, so its not just user vs selected user, but user vs a number of selected users. You would be able to compete against your friends in a way that would be very fun.

Collecting

I understand that people are scared that Bunt is going to turn into Huddle, but I can guarantee it will not. Because of league licensing situations, Huddle has to take a different approach that doesnt need to happen in Bunt.

For 2015, I would like to see more of a focus on crowd sourced card creation, with a larger opportunity for users to help pick checklists or weekly payout cards, etc. With the signature series cards dominating the trade economy, it would be awesome for those team’s fans to help choose the player for their team. Give fans more power to choose the cards they want to collect. We saw this a bit with Voter’s choice, but that is just the beginning, I hope.

Points Chase

Its unfortunate that the Best of Bunt cards werent worth as much as they should be. However, when you are competing on a week long platform, more rewards should be given to those that can manage to get to the top. Team champion banners are great, but additional coins should be provided as well.

Similarly, if there is a way to do a Best of Bunt type reward based on teams, that would be really cool, even though I know how much extra work it would be to build 30 cards instead of 5 or 6.

When you see the way Topps Kick delivers out their awards, I believe that is the best way to do it. Give the top players all the cards, not just the level they finish. Those cards should have boosts attached to them, so they become more functional and not just a trophy.

Gameplay

Somehow, some way, hitters need to be relevant on an inning by inning basis. Im sure this is a hot topic in planning for 2015, but it might not be as popular as I think it will. Pitchers are the currency in which Bunt is traded, and many users may not appreciate a large scale switch.

That being said, we all like playing our favorite guys, and if that’s a hitter, good luck. Play timers and play counters prevent a big focus on switching in hitters, although that might all change for all we know.

It would be interesting to see what might happen if every position on the field had to be represented at all times, with multiple cards being stacked for bigger points boosts. Like you have to play a 2B the whole game, but if you have 8 of the same guy, stacking them gets you more points. Something like that would change the dynamic and make it very fun to pick your lineup on a more fantasy based situation.

Overall, I have the utmost confidence in the team to deliver an awesome app, especially now that TOPPSMIKE has a new set of hands to help out. I guess we will have to see what happens.

NFL Playoff Primer – Who Should You Chase for the 4 Remaining Teams?

Okay, if you are like me, you are left scrambling to get more cards for the teams that are still left. Now that two teams with huge firepower in the game are out (Cowboys and Broncos), you are left with four teams that you might need to do some work on. Here are some players to target.

Andrew Luck – QB, INDY

The Colts are easily the one team that has so few cards in the game that you were left scratching your head as to what to do when they got on offense. Luck is a VITAL player to chase, as they dont have many players that will contribute on offense the way he will. Considering how many huge boosts exist of him, you need to get a few to be competitive.

Verdict: Vital Piece

TY Hilton – WR, INDY

As mentioned above, there just arent many pieces to the Colts that will score a ton of points. Hilton could get some big deep looks and some big gains, which means you need to pick up some of his cards. I think that he might be one of the more important guys because his team is so weak in Huddle on offense.

Verdict: Worth Picking Up

Tom Brady – QB, NEW ENGLAND

Even though he didnt play lights out really until the second half, Brady is one of those guys that can take command and take over a game. Because the running game is regularly non-existant, there needs to be a consideration to have more of his cards on your team.

Verdict: Vital Piece

Rob Gronkowski – TE, NEW ENGLAND

There is no one I expect more to have an enormous game coming up than Gronk. The Colts have guys that can play some great coverage on the WRs, which means Edelman may be at risk. They DO NOT have anyone that can cover Gronk. There might not be a team other than Seattle left that does.

Verdict: Vital Piece

Eddie Lacy – RB, GREEN BAY

The Packers do not have a great offensive line, all things considered. Running into Seattle’s defense is like running into a line of Police wearing riot gear. Its just not going to happen in a good way. Lacy may get his yards and maybe a score, but Green Bay is in some trouble with the way Rodgers is limited.

Verdict: ??????

Aaron Rodgers – QB, GREEN BAY

Lets face it, watching the Packers’ offense on Sunday was like watching a different team. Although they still played on a top level, Rodgers wasnt himself in the elements of his game that made him successful. From what reports are, Rodgers is hurting more now than he was previously, which means he could be further limited. Not a good sign going against a defense like the Seahawks possess. I would invest your time picking up more of Nelson and Cobb than Rodgers to be honest.

Verdict: Low Priority (Odd to even write that)

Russell Wilson – QB, SEATTLE

I fully expect the Seahawks to steamroll the Packers. That makes me happy as a Vikings fan. However, Russell Wilson needs to play well to advance. He has his ups and downs, but overall, there has been no more worthwhile investment so far in Huddle, if not only because he runs AND throws.

Verdict: Vital Piece

Marshawn Lynch – RB, SEATTLE

Even though his team rolled on Carolina, its more a result of everyone but the running game. That scares me a bit, even though the Panthers have a better defense than the Packers. Lynch looked off a beat this past weekend, and it might be due to illness. Hopefully he will return to form, which is the only reason I would suggest picking up more of him.

Verdict: Worth Picking Up

I am banking on a Patriots vs Seahawks Super Bowl, which features two teams that I dont really like all that much. I would love to see Luck get a shot, which could happen. You just never know what is going to happen in the Playoffs.

Gridiron Unwrapped – FINAL Reward Card Edition!

From the first day of Huddle, I have been waiting for this day. I knew that the weekly inserts were going to deliver some amazing chases over the year, and when the Marshawn Lynch sig hit packs I started opening and never looked back.

Over the course of the season, I collected 3 of the season master sets, and a number of the weekly set rewards as well. Yesterday was the payoff for all that work, and after seeing the results, its clear that TOPPSMARC and the team have been just as excited for this day as we are. They did such a tremendous job for each of the reward sets, and really deserve a lot of credit for the way these turned out.

Not only was the player selection quite impressive, but the added boosts of 10x and 15x for each level of card was just icing on the cake. We didnt chase these reward cards for the boost, we chased them for the thrill of opening packs and putting together sets. Seeing how that all came to fruition was wonderful, as many of the cards are playoff bound top scorers. Bottom line, next year, a lot of people are going to chase these sets as a result of yesterday, as well they should.

I think it was a cool idea to basically structure the player subjects according to the value of the set. The more valuable sets got the top guys, and the less valuable sets got guys that might not be on that level, but still very collectable. I think these turned out great, and I am happy with every one I got.

Here are my thoughts on the way everything turned out.

Signature Series Reward Season Master Set – Tom Brady

Huddle had a good idea for the season long sets – make them gold. Not just gold colored but resembling cards etched into gold. If you remember last year, they tried a similar thing with the Russell Wilson Super Bowl Halftime foil card, and it worked maybe 10% as well visiually. These cards are awesome, and will be some of the most coveted of the entire season. At 15x, this Brady all of a sudden becomes one of the more coveted cards to use in the playoffs as well.

Signature Series Reward Weeks 11-17 – Eddie Lacy

Cool Factor: Black Level

For the teams playing this weekend, the Packers might have their hands the most full with the Dallas Cowboys. Either way, Lacy has been playing like a Mack Truck as of late, unstoppable, which means this card has some major play factor. Either way, this was definitely a good sig to choose for the reward, as many of the other players were either already sigs, used for other reward cards or less cool.

Golden Moments Reward Season Master Set – Peyton Manning

I really liked the Golden Moments all year long. The set design worked for both head shots and action shots, and looked sweet in the process. Manning had a GM card during the season, but he is easily one of the more representative players of big moments during 2014 setting the record and such. I love this card, and was happy to see it as the season reward.

Golden Moments Reward Weeks 11-17 – Russell Wilson

I think its getting clear that it is hard to put together 19-20 moments to commemorate in this fashion all year. Im glad they saved Russell Wilson, because the card turned out really freaking awesome. At 10x, this becomes Wilson’s biggest boost, which will be very valuable come tomorrow. That being said, after going through the first four, it should be no surprise that the playoffs are all over the better set rewards.

Editor’s Choice Reward Season Master Set – Tony Romo

Because Lesean McCoy EC was such a rare card (released one day before the HS fiasco), this was a relatively impossible set to complete. Manning, the other EC from that day has less than 100 copies too, and most are on lockdown. Romo was a good choice for this card, as he is a popular player who scored a lot of points in his MVP caliber season.

Editor’s Choice Reward Weeks 11-17 – TY Hilton

Of all the players in the playoffs, Hilton has the fewest boosts. He played a relatively good game last week, but the main attraction of this card is his season, which was very impressive. Hilton doesnt have the name recognition of some of the other guys in the reward sets, which is why I gave him a lower rating, but that could all change this weekend.

Monday Night Series Reward Season Master Set – Jamaal Charles

A lot of people chase Jamaal Charles because he is so exciting of a player. Charles is a big reason why the Chiefs got as far as they did, but not being in the playoffs was a big disappointment for Kansas City fans that saw them with a top seed last year. From a collectability standpoint, this is a really nice reward.

Monday Night Series Reward Weeks 11-17 – DeAndre Hopkins

Cool Factor: Free to Play Level

To be honest, this was kind of a bummer to see Hopkins as the choice, as he doesnt have the team collectors or the name recognition. Although he played well during the season, there just arent that many people that are going to try to chase down this type of thing. I would have probably gone with someone like Drew Brees or Matt Forte.

Player of the Week Reward Season Master Set – Marshawn Lynch

What a cool card. Seriously one of the better ones given out. The funny thing is that Marshawn Lynch was already the first of the reward cards for POTW, which makes this relatively full circle. I doubt anyone is complaining either. He is going to have his hands full with the Panthers this week, but I dont think there is an analyst on the planet that doesnt expect him to run beast mode all over the place.

Player of the Week Reward Weeks 11-17 – Mike Evans

Cool Factor: Gold Level

I am a huge fan of Mike Evans, huge fan. I would have been really happy to get this card, and I think he almost deserves as much consideration as Beckham for ROY. That being said, he is still an up and coming guy in terms of name recognition. Still cool.

Fan’s Choice Reward Season Master Set – Odell Beckham

Playability: N/A
Cool Factor: Black Level

If you arent a fan of the spectacular catches he makes, you must either be an Eagles fan, or someone that hasnt seen him play. Beckham embodies exactly what the fan’s choice set is all about, as he was easily one of the most chase worthy rookies this year. Everyone wanted a piece, including a recent fan of the week. That is the only drawback, but im sure this card was in production before they chose their card.

Fan’s Choice Reward Weeks 11-17 – Cam Newton

We are all shocked the Panthers have made it this far as a 7-9 team. Newton started off playing on a pretty low standard, but really picked it up coming down the stretch. We can all agree that probably ends this week, but it was fun while it lasted. Newton is a popular player which makes him perfect for this reward.

Rising Star Reward Season Master Set – Le’veon Bell

risingstars_pit_leveon_bell_l

Cool Factor: Black Level

I said before that Bell had a great season as one of the more consistent backs. Like Antonio Brown and Ben Roethlisberger, Bell and the Pittsburgh offense was usually pretty fun to watch. Even though he didnt play last week, and they were eliminated, this is a really cool card.

Rising Star Reward Weeks 11-17 – Jeremy Hill

risingstars_cin_jeremy_hill_l

Count: 123

Cool Factor: Gold Level

Of all the rookies this year that werent on my Vikings, I really liked watching Jeremy Hill’s power running style. I am someone who is always drawn to the big bruising running backs, and he is right there with the best this year. Already a finalist for ROY that will likely go to Beckham, he deserves some major consideration.

Again, this has been a tremendous season all around. I had more fun than I ever could have imagined, and having these cards as a payoff was really cool.
