Valuable Bunt Redemption Code Cards Return For Topps Update Baseball

When Topps Series 2 Baseball first hit, we were intrigued by the first ever promotion that crossed between physical and digital. Not only were there code cards that provided access to free coins within the game, but also redemptions for EXTREMELY rare 5x boosts that were /25 and available in Hobby packs.

They were some of the most expensive and rare insert cards in the game:

2015 Topps Series 2 Jon Lester Bunt Redemption Code Card /25

2015 Topps Series 2 Anthony Rizzo Bunt Redemption Code Card /25

2015 Topps Series 2 Yasiel Puig Bunt Redemption Code Card /25

2015 Topps Series 2 Matt Harvey Bunt Redemption Code Card /25

Now that Topps Update Baseball, the third physical set of the year featuring the flagship design, we are getting another batch of redemption cards that will likely be more focused on collectability over gameplay. With the MLB season pretty much over, these cards should be a bit different in their structure. I might also fathom that there is a chance that these could end up as the first scoring cards of 2016 when all is said and done.

The checklist was published on the Topps website earlier today, and it includes a few cards that are repeats from last time, as well as a few new faces that include Kris Bryant.

Here is who they have this time around:

Huddle Launches the First Season Long Boosted Cards in Packs

Yesterday was an interesting day in Huddle, especially when it comes to the release of Purple Boosts. These cards score at 2.2x, which is currently the second highest perma-scoring cards in the game. There are a few set rewards that score at 2.5x, but they are not able to be pulled from packs. Because of what happened last year around this same time, people are getting curious if things will go nuts like last year. Here are some thoughts.

Background

Around week 2 of last year, Huddle lost the ability to produce action shot cards. In the announcement discussing the change, there was a commitment to focusing on the gameplay side of things. Over the next few months, Huddle released hundreds of boosted base cards in all sorts of colors and patterns, to replace their ability to give a lot of variety in player photo subject matter. The community has affectionately called this situation “boost mania,” as it was clear that Huddle went kind of nuts. I discussed it in depth here in my 2014 year in review.

Whether it was a positive experience depends on who you ask, as many users (including myself) dove head first into the gameplay and had a blast during 2014. Others decided the app wasnt fun with so much commitment to the boost culture and decided to go a different direction.

Is This Boost Mania 2.0?

If you were around in 2014, you know this isnt 2.0. It isnt even close. That being said, I am excited that Topps has started to embrace the Huddle community’s love for playing contests, and given people more options for high scoring cards. Gameplay is a big part of Huddle and rightfully so, as NFL fantasy continues to be a BILLION dollar business overall. That means more people who come to Huddle will be open to the fact that Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays are going to be spent in front of the TV, in some capacity.

Capture

That’s not saying that Topps is abandoning the collecting side of things – as we have seen with the launch of Legends, and other HIGHLY collectible series. I would scoff at anyone who thinks that embracing both sides of the aisle is a bad business move, despite the connotations with 2014 it might invoke.

Its obvious that gold cards of elite point scorers are more valuable in Huddle than they ever were in any other game, and that should not be surprising. To offer even rarer cards that have higher boost levels in packs is only going to incite a feeding frenzy among the people who want those cards for their lineups. This is exactly what any business wants to do.

To see that the new NFL license ALSO provides them the opportunity to produce collector focused cards without limits, showcases how much different 2015 is than 2014. Inserts and other rare cards werent dead last year, but lets face it, this is a completely different ball game.

Value and Gameplay

Im still puzzled as to why they went 2.2x instead of 2.5x like Bunt or even 3x to match the game boosts. The article may say these are “One of the highest scoring cards that will score the whole season that can be pulled from packs”, but that doesnt mean they are THE highest scoring.

Knowing the way the Huddle producers think, they likely put this line in the article for two reasons. 1) Playoffs cards will score higher, and 2) there could be higher boosts coming later. Right now, there really isnt a need to go nuts like last year, but that also doesnt mean there isnt money to be made.

Right now, the Beckham Purple is the most valuable in a gameplay sense. Although Hyde, Miller and Weddle are all considerably rarer, they have maybe 1/4th the potential to score points as Beckham does. If you are looking to trade for the other three, its likely you are just going to pay for the rarity – as they are some of the rarest cards available currently. Miller in the mid 50s for card count is insanely low, and that could be interesting later on.

Any of the purple boosts will take some major firepower to acquire, especially with so few 2x plus scoring cards available at the moment. Remember, with only 11 more games to play per team, you know people are going to want to stack their lineups as quickly as possible. This isnt like baseball where the boosts can be used close to 100 times.

Future Possibilities

I hope they continue to release a few each week. I really do. Its fun, the cards are valuable still and nothing is getting watered down. The second they start putting out sets that overshadow the game boosts, then I might have an issue.

To me, the game only boosts are something that needs to retain value to the general collector. When sets start coming out, things get completely out of whack – especially if the cards are released on Thursday or Monday night.

If they want to do one card per team on those nights, I think the perception of the release changes from completely “UGGG here we go again!!!” to “Hmm, I might need to buy a few packs here.” If they eventually flood the market, everything goes to hell, and I start looking to go on eBay to buy things instead of buying from the pack store. I would hate to see that be the case.

Right now, boosts are a novelty, and I really, really, really want to keep it that way. It appeals to the collecting side of the app and the gameplay side of the app at the same time, and if things DO get out of hand, that will change dramatically.

As with all the Topps apps, things change drastically in short periods of time. We still have yet to see the introduction of a “Smuggler’s Den” type feature, which could play in big for boost type cards. THAT would be something I would be interested to see how it works out, especially if Huddle uses it the right way.

Topps Digital at New York Comic Con 2015 – Recapping the Big Moments of the Weekend

There are really a few big comic conventions each year, some of which are more important than others. One of the biggest of the year, is San Diego Comic Con, which is the one that all the movies and franchises run their publicity through. Another big convention is in New York each year, and though it doesnt get as much pub, it is still a huge event. Being that Topps is stationed in New York City, this is a perfect event for them to attend in support of their digital apps.

CQzbruhWIAAXmXn

First off, if you see the pictures they posted on social media, you can see just how much work they put into their setup. Not only does it look sleek and high tech, but it also showcases the investment Topps is making in their digital portfolio. I have never seen a card company dive so deep into a platform before, and just seeing the amount of money they are going to invest in convention setups is incredible. The booth looked beyond awesome, and I am sure they stuck out in a good way on the show floor.

5

Secondly, a few SWCT themed partnerships came out of the weekend, with the first being actor related, and the second being SW universe related. Ill start with the actor one, because its someone that I think was a great partnership to form. Ashley Eckstein runs a clothing company called “Her Universe” which focuses on sci-fi themed wares that are aimed at enthusiasts. She also voices the popular character Ahsoka Tano on the cartoon series, which might be the only non-movie based creation to really take off in the app.

4

As someone who is a force on Social Media with SW fans, a partnership with Eckstein serves to be very beneficial. Ahsoka is a powerful female force in the SW universe, and that plays well with fans in the app. This might mean that more cards based on the characters Eckstein voices, as well as the possibility of using her likeness as a person for Signatures, much like Billy Dee Williams.

1 2

As for the Del Rey Books partnership, I also see a lot of potential there, as they are responsible for some of the more important works that bridge the gap between ROTJ and the Force Awakens. We have already seen an AWESOME Death Star themed card released during the show, and it has been very difficult to trade for. When Battlefront cards were announced at SDCC, they became way too easy to pull, and all the value was sucked out. With the Aftermath card, its a completely different story. At 2500 copies, its on the lower spectrum of insert value, and the design makes it popular.

3

Anytime we see a partnership like this, it opens the door for a lot of content if used the right way, and Del Rey has a wide range of books and covers to make into cards. The fans are pretty familiar with a lot of those stories, as they have been deemed canonical in some cases. Because of the rabid nature of acquiring SW knowledge for fanboys that populate the app, this could be a very fruitful deal indeed. Even more so if more novelizations are planned leading up to December.

6

We also got more Star Wars Rebels cards leading up to the new season of the show, and they included a bunch of really cool hyper color variants at lower pull rates for people who were at NYCC. The other variants of the cards seemed to be of normal value for cartoon based inserts, but people REALLY liked the cool effect from the hyper colors, making them significantly more valuable.

As a whole, this app is turning into quite the juggernaut for Topps, as its clear that the fan base is so hungry for content, that it almost doesnt matter what the cards are about. It sure doesnt hurt that each release has been so awesome, with new pack delivery methods and set building situations that keep things fresh. The app has changed recently with the introduction of Smuggler’s den, but it is looking like the absence of the main marathons (now that they are over), isnt effecting much of the daily traffic.

Huddle Series 2: Five Players You Need to Have NOW!

Yesterday was a big day, as we saw the release of Series 2 in Huddle. Although it was just in time for yesterday’s game, this weekend will be the first time that the cards are REALLY going to make a difference. There are some important guys that you need to have sooner rather than later, and im going to detail them in this post. Dont give up the house necessarily to get them, but if you can use your trading magic to build up a stash of commons, it would be highly advantageous.

Devonta Freeman – RB, Atlanta Falcons

unnamed (1)

The Falcons play next Thursday night, which gives you a head start in building up some cards for a guy that has scored 3 TDs in a game multiple times this year already. He will come in handy against the Saints, whose defense is among the worst in the league over the last few years.

Rashad Jennings – RB, New York Giants

unnamed (2)

With the G-men playing on Sunday night against a team that has struggled, Jennings could get some major looks in a game that everyone in Huddle country will be watching. Although he hasnt had a great season quite yet, the Giants running game could be on display at home against a terrible Niners team. If they go up early, they wont pass as much – thus giving Jennings his time in the sun. The Giants ALSO play next Monday night as well, so you get the double dip fun on this one.

Martavis Bryant – WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

unnamed (4)

He was suspended to start the year, but will be active as the Steelers face the Chargers on Monday night. He is a huge deep threat, and with Vick being a gunslinger as it is, he could have a lot of chances to show off his speed. Although he wont get 10 catches, all you need is that one bomb to jump in the standings when no one else has his cards.

Antonio Gates – TE, San Diego Chargers

unnamed (3)

Another suspension victim that will be activated on Monday, Gates is one of those guys you can never sleep on. Although he is getting older and isnt the threat he used to be, Rivers has been having issues finding a groove in the Offense. His old friend should act as a red zone threat and a potential security blanket, which could be used much to your advantage.

Joseph Randle – RB, Dallas Cowboys

unnamed (5)

Even though the Cowboys are going up against New England this week, its a 4pm game and the passing game will have very little success against the Patriots secondary. Garrett has already committed to getting the ball into Randle’s hands more, as the offensive line is the one strength the Cowboys still have.

Honorable Mentions:

Deangelo Williams, Steelers – Bell’s return has meant reduced carries, but he has been great through the weeks as the featured back before the suspension ended.

Reuben Randle, Giants – He has caught as many TDs this year than Beckham, just saying.

Tyrod Taylor, Bills – Horrible week for Buffalo last week, but Taylor has been a surprise.

Huddle Legends: New Format Brings a Huge Chase to the App

As I had mentioned before, I knew the “box break” format would be coming to the other apps. Its a great idea to add some premium content to users who are interested in spending that kind of money. Seeing that they are using the box break format in Huddle to launch a very awesome set of Legends for the first time in the app makes it even more of an interesting situation.

unnamed

Background

With each drop, there are 25 boxes to be opened for 900k a pop. In this break, you will get 9 golds and one guaranteed insert. Of the 7 inserts, you can either get one of the big three cards – a Legend (biggest score), a dual sig, or a dual sig variant. You can also pull one of the 4 duds, which are Relics, Lightning or the least valuable card in the Turn Back the Clock insert. Being that each of the cards are 1:7 or now 1:6 with Lightning sold out, you have a 50/50 shot at pulling a dud or hitting one of the big scores.

Valuing the Cards

The Legend card is a BIG deal, especially when the first card is Jerry Rice, who is arguably one of the biggest legends they could have started with. As of right now, the only card in the game with a bigger value might be the 1/1 Newton, and I dont see that changing, even when more legends cards hit the sheet. The Dual Sig, oddly enough is Newton as well, putting his face on two of the biggest cards in Huddle to date. Each of the big three is a win, as they will likely have enough of a low count to be worth the 100 dollar investment.

If you come out with one of the other four, now three cards, you are out a lot of money. A LOT of money. Relics arent worth much, and TBTC is worth even less than that. This is something that doesnt sit right with me, as both Star Wars and Bunt guaranteed the big winners in their box breaks. Although not guaranteeing a good pull will add value to the boxes that contain a big three card, I dont really see that as a necessary situation. That being said, I understand why it was done.

Not only does it allow for more boxes to be released without fear of diluting the card counts, but you might get more boxes out of someone who buys the 100 dollar box and ends up with a dud. It happens in physical cards, and it happens here too.

At the same time, you could permanently lose a customer as well, especially if they are overreaching for the cost of the box. If someone is a Niners fan, wants the Rice card, and spends that hundred bucks they would normally spend over a month – only to get the dud, they could be done for good. Not a positive situation at all.

Should You Buy In?

If you have a budget at all, this program is not for you. If you are a 49ers fan, or a Panthers fan, I would be all over this and maybe more than once. The Rice card should hold up enough to try a box, especially if 100 bucks isnt going to maim your spending for the rest of the month. Its clear that enough people wanted the big three cards to buy into a box, as the first wave sold out in a matter of minutes. The second and third waves have been much slower, but they are selling from what we can see on the increasing card counts of the main cards.

Adding in the award card for chasing down all the legends cards, things could get pretty crazy when you think about it. I know of at least 3 or 4 people who will spend until they get the card they want, and that is why Huddle wants to build a program like this. Not only is it fun and a great looking set, but it adds something that a big spender can buy knowing that no random user who gets lucky wont have the same card.

Im excited to see what is coming in the next few releases, as I would expect Triple Sigs (based on Bunt) to eventually be a thing as well. There are a lot of place this can go, and we might be in for some really big chases in the future.

2015 Bunt Post Season: Transitioning to the Final Leg of the Year

I love this time of year, as I have mentioned a few times, and today we start the final leg of 2015. The AL and NL wild card play in games will be today and tomorrow, and I think that we are in for a treat with the way Bunt will celebrate some of the most important games of the year.

Yesterday Bunt released all of their post season base cards, all of which feature new pictures and include some players who havent had cards yet. There were some amazing photos of players celebrating as they clinched their post season birth, and its clear that the team spent a lot of time thinking through which players will be making an impact.

1011

The boost levels of the cards range from 2x to 5x, which is quite an increase over the standard boost levels of the regular season, but not so much that previous cards are nerfed. Last year’s massive increase in boost caused a lot of indigestion with users who had built up big collections of points cards, and I dont think that is going to happen as much with the way the cards are done this year. Similarly, with packs made up of entire runs of post season cards, it makes the cards much easier to come by. This was not as much the case last year, and its a good way to keep everyone in a top flight mode as the big contests get going.

Although nothing has been announced quite yet, we should be seeing some articles posted that details what Mike was referring to in the article I posted last week. There should be some MASSIVE physical prizes for users that perform at the top of the standings, and I know that should create some insanity around the contests that has been missing all season.

As someone who was more of a collector than a gamer this year, I will definitely be playing along as much as possible, especially if the prizes are as big as Mike has said they will be. Im sure we will be finding out in a matter of minutes, and I cant wait to see what they have in store.

When it comes to chasing down cards to play over the next month, I think its worth talking through which players should end up being the top dogs. For right now, try to play the odds with the wild card teams, as the one game playoff is definitely a troubling situation for someone looking to build multiple dupes of the big point producers. I would say that the Astros and the Cubs are ripe to move on, but they are quite evenly matched in both games. If Dallas Keuchel and Jake Arrieta pitch as well as they have during the regular season, their teams should have no issue moving on.

At that point, its worth your time to dive in and dive in head first. Pick up as many of the pitchers as you can, guys like Greinke, Kershaw, Price, Cueto, and the other aces are sure bets to score massive points, and you will want multiple red cards and higher to ensure you have the firepower to compete. I would also chase down guys that have power and dont strike out a lot. Think Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki of the Blue Jays, both of which should be targets for your lineup.

Because there will only be one game being played at a time, you can really play every last batter and pitcher who is in the game. Try to stay on top of the live broadcast, as it will give you more time to make lineup switches before the API loads the scoring into the app.

Overall, this is going to be the most fun on the contest side we have seen all year, and I cannot wait to see what is in store. We know that there will be many releases coming, and that these post season cards are only the tip of the ice berg. I fully expect game boosts, post season heroes and other fun sets that will all serve to stack your lineup even further. Even if you dont qualify for one of the huge prizes, you will definitely have the opportunity to see what playoff Bunt is all about. I cannot wait.

UPDATE:

Here is an insane list of prizes that will be offered for the top finishers in the post season challenge contests. Not only are these ridiculously valuable in their own right, it is really, really cool to consider how much Topps is putting into these batches of contests. Color me more excited as we learn more.

SWCT Force Tip of the Day: What to Expect from Topps Illustrated Mania

Cards with low card counts have major appeal in SWCT. It stems from the app approach that many cards should have counts that make them accessible to the massive crowd that populates the game. When the team designs a program around counts that are destined to be extremely limited, you know people are going to go nuts.

Capture

Investment

There is no doubt that this program is designed for the whales. If you have managed to save up the enormous pack cost of 500k-900k, this is probably not the place to spend it. If you can spare the coins, and love the cards, than by all means, this is for you.

In reality, spending the 500k on the premium pack is probably not the best way to go, unless you just dont have a way to spend the 100 bucks on the supreme pack. The reason I say this has to do with the pack structure, as you are only afforded one card per 500k pack. In the Supreme version, you get an extra card for 100k less than it would cost you otherwise, plus you get the opportunity to pull the red version, which has been insanely hard to get.

As for the gray pack, which only costs 5k, this is where you can REALLY make out. Because the odds are tough, its likely you wont be able to pull more than one gray parallel in the pack during the 5 minutes its available, but you might get lucky and pull a single copy, which you can trade for some massive hauls.

Value

When the program first started with Boba last week, it was a much different dynamic than what we saw with the second card. Even though the counts were almost identical on all the different parallels, the villains cards definitely started off lower in value from the get go.

With Boba, value was inflated at first because of two main reasons. First, no one knew what the hell was going on, and every Boba collector was scrambling to get their hands on a card that they thought could have a count less than 50. Secondly, once the cards hit over 100, there was less of a buzz, even though that is still an insanely low card count for any insert in the game.

As with most investments, the cost of the pack was likely more than the eventual value of the card, which showed in the second release. Because the whales knew that many people were purchasing the Villains pack to trade the insert, the leverage of holding the card hostage for a ransom was gone. This means there would be a flood of each card hitting the block, coupled with a steady stream of people looking to unload their now less rare Boba card.

Let me put it this way, the card will eventually be more valuable than it is currently – ESPECIALLY if they offer a shred opportunity in the future. I could see them putting out gold parallels and allowing you to shred another parallel for a shot at one. If that is the case, it could reduce count and add value back to the people who had them for trade.

Next Releases

I would be shocked if there werent more of these cards on the way. More importantly, there may be many more of these cards on the way. If that ends up being the case, look for something larger to eventually become available. We saw this approach used in Bunt over the weekend, and it was insanely successful there as well.

I believe that all the apps will have some sort of limited guaranteed insert type format eventually, and that this will not be the last set in SWCT to use this approach.

If more cards are released, the demand will always drop, even if they decide to reduce the number of packs being released. There are two cards that always go for more in a set, the first card and the last card. The middle cards are usually less valuable, unless there is some huge amount of extenuating circumstances.

Bottom line, I think the Smuggler’s Den is the wild card in all of this, and I would play each card with that in mind.

For me, I really like this format and hope that they use it in many more different ways. The app loves limited releases, and this presents a great way for that to be available without people freaking out about set impact.

Cant wait to see how this evolves.

Bunt Boxes: What to Make of the 1990 Draft Picks Event

For those of you who were not familiar with this set, it was released in 2015 Topps Archives, with some of the best looking retro cards of the year. Based on the crazy popular 1990 set featuring Frank Thomas’ rookie card, this was a throwback to cards I loved as a kid.

Introducing “box breaks” to the app, Bunt used a special format to release the cards, which included a rare signature card as a “box topper.” Im actually surprised it took them this long to implement something like this, and though the execution was fumbled by tech issues, I think its a great idea.

2

Basically, this opens the door for what many users have complained about since the beginning of 2014. Ripping into tons of packs, and not coming out the other end with anything to show for it. This takes care of that situation exclusively with adding a VERY valuable card for the tremendous spend of 500k coins to get in on the action.

Check out some of the 1/1s already listed on eBay:

2015 Bunt Madison Bumgarner 1990 Draft 1/1 Gold Auto

2015 Bunt Max Scherzer 1990 Draft 1/1 Gold Auto

Here are some others /10 and /25:

2015 Bunt Mike Trout 1990 Draft Purple Auto /25

2015 Bunt Mark Teixiera 1990 Red Auto /10

The 1/1 signature cards are the first of their kind in Bunt this year, and are worth spending the money just so that you can have access to the set. Not only is the set awesome, but to be able to have a shot at some of the insanely rare signatures guaranteed is a no brainer to me.

I rarely buy into large coin bundles, but I was all over this promotion. For player collectors, pulling one of the top guys like Trout or Harper could mean a windfall of trade value if you find the right person clamoring for the card.

1

When I saw that my main player target had a sig, I immediately began the quest to get it. I was able to get my hands on it thanks to a massive offer I made, and I literally could not be happier. Im sure there are more people out there who are feeling the exact same way.

Eventually the box break should come back more often, if I had my way. Of course, it has to take the right type of set. It cant be used with signature box toppers every time a new set is released.

Even with the massive issues that plagued the release, there werent many people who walked out of this disappointed. That should say a lot about how exciting some of these cards were.

Huddle Year Over Year: Breaking Down the Importance of the NFL License

When I heard that Huddle would be fully licensed by the NFL and NFLPA instead of just the NFLPA, I almost lost it. I knew how much things were going to change for the better, especially now that pictures no longer had to be edited or head shot focused. Here is a look at the progression from last year to this year.

Base Card

2 31

I actually thought that the 2015 base design was great. Of course, with airbrushed action shots, it was nicer than the headshots on a gray background, which were really tough to stomach for the whole season. Even though the 2015 design was great, the 2016 Topps Football design used on the physical side looks like it was built for Huddle. Not only that but it looks awesome in all the parallel colors. Add in that the pictures are no longer retouched at all takes this to a whole new level. There is just no comparison when the card looks the way it does with an actual game shot.

Signature Series

Capture45

The 2015 signature series design with the action shots was a thing of beauty, even though the design highlighted how much editing had to be done to each picture. When they moved to head shots, the design no longer worked as well, because it always looked like the player was peaking over the nameplate. In 2016, the signature design is not only extremely well done, but utilizes the full license in such a dynamic fashion. The player pic against the team logo background is really freaking cool.

Editor’s Choice

287

For 2015, Huddle used a retro look to the cards, which was quite interesting when they were first released. Although I understood what they were trying to do, I just didnt know how I felt about using such a simple look. When they switched to head shots, it was even worse, because the card ended up so, so plain. This year, they used a much more modern look, making the card look like a patch sewn onto the background like a jersey. Awesome design, especially with the expanded look at the picture’s content outside just the player.

Best of Huddle

2911

I thought the steel presentation of the BoH cards from 2015 were really cool, other than the logo and text above the nameplate.  On the head shots, it looks like the football is tattooed on the player for most of the cards. For 2016, the card is taking a simple, yet modern approach that I absolutely love. The fact that most of the pictures they used are from the current season makes these cards even more desirable.

Game Only Boosts

IMG_21425599

We only got one helping of game boosts with action shots last year, and they looked really, really cool. When they switched over to headshots, the cards just tended to look significantly more boring, which is unfortunate. For this year, the design is a 100% upgrade over the action shot 2015, and I like that you can tell the boost level on the front, which helps with confusion. We also have a date on the front of the card, which prevents the need to use second editions. Also helps there are thousands of more pics to choose from.

Topps Inception

2 1

This was my favorite set of the year in 2015, and it is already insanely popular this year as well. Its clear why the cards are so coveted, as the presentation of the players look better with the abstract background. The more painted presentation of 2015, combined with the EXTREME rarity, are the kicker, but man 2016 is sweet.

1965 Tall Boys

5Capture

Being that this is a retro design, there isnt much difference between the two cards, im just showing you how much difference there is between a fully licensed card and a head shot. Its just nuts how much better the cards look.

Although its clear that this is really a no brainer in terms of how much better the cards look with the license, I wanted to highlight just how important it really is. You can see significant upgrades over the course of the entire app, not just in the look of the cards.

SWCT Finish Line: Completing Marathons and What Comes Next

Here we are. We can see the finish line for the original week one marathons, and it is glorious. Vintage is the first of the seven sets to be completed, and it is one I have collected since Han in the Millenium Falcon hit packs over 30 weeks ago. I cannot believe it has been that long, as this has been one wild and fun ride.

CQPSQG5VEAA3rEf

With production delays impacting all the other sets, some of them might not finish for a few weeks now. Even though that is the case, its clear that the original days of the app are coming to a close in a way that we havent really been prepared for as a community. Marathons have been a part of our daily lives for the better part of a year now, and I am curious to see what might happen when the last of the original sets end.

Completing Your Marathons

Over the next week, you will need to get your Vintage set in order, which includes the Luke Preps for Battle if you want all three award cards that are coming (21-30, 1-29 and now 1-30). You should also kick it into high gear for getting your other main sets done, which I have listed out here based on difficulty at this point:

  1. Vintage
  2. Widevision
  3. Topps Choice
  4. Connections
  5. Bounty
  6. Galactic Moments
  7. Fans Choice

Galactic Moments should end up being the last one to finish with all the delays and variants, so that isnt as high a priority right now. If you have yet to get your copy of Obi Wan WV or the ever elusive Vintage Han, you might be out of luck. Adding in that the Luke Preps for Battle Vintage only has 1250 copies is also a tall task, but it can be done.

Widevision as a whole has dropped in value significantly over the last part of the marathon, but people still attach that residual value we have seen thanks to the aura around the wave one cards that are so tough to get.

Connections and Topps Choice are almost neck and neck in my opinion as the 3rd most valuable set, especially with how much some of the wave one Topps Choice cards go for. Wicket, Sabine, and other card values are enough to offset the cost of the Sith Connections card for Maul and Sidious, as many of the rest of the connections cards are interchangeable even going back to wave 2. The Han / Chewy and Han / Leia cards are tough to get, but higher counts without much dead account attrition should make them still available.

What Comes Next?

I think that this question is one that I have yet to really figure out. Its entirely possible that they just start all over with week 31 and do another 30 cards, but that isnt like them. We could end up being in the relative “offseason” for SWCT, with a primary focus put on Smuggler’s Den and Build Mode as the Marathons go away.

We could also see them launch seven NEW marathons, which might last 10-20 weeks before we could go into a SWCT season 2 type of situation. Eventually a new year of the app with a new build will come. As Bunt 2016 kicks off the new year for Topps Digital, I foresee that this app should get an upgrade at some point as well. It obviously wont be the same thing as the sports apps, but im curious to see what eventually happens.

There is no doubt in my mind that I want daily marathons to chase. Similarly, I dont want the sets like Vintage and Widevision to “end.” Does that mean we should prepare our SWCT consciousness to exist without these sets? Maybe.

At some point in the future we will get to see what their plans look like for the next few months of the app. I am hoping that with the release of Force Awakens and other big events, we will have an opportunity to see the frenzy created when the original Marathons earned their stripes.
